Disney has had a number of successful live-action adaptations, yet Snow White was not among them. Even before its release in 2025, the adaptation faced numerous controversies. Among these were issues regarding the portrayal of the seven dwarfs and disagreements about the leading actresses Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. Additionally, there were whispers of an inflated budget, making any success, both critically and financially, seem unlikely. This was underscored by the strong negative response, culminating in a review bombing on IMDb. Currently, the film has a rating of 1.6 out of 10 stars on that platform.
Regrettably, the unfavorable reviews seem to have impacted the film’s financial success at the box office, as it only managed to earn $42.2 million domestically during its opening weekend. Although it claimed the top spot for that period, it underperformed compared to other live-action Disney princess adaptations like 2015’s Cinderella and 2023’s The Little Mermaid, which started with $67.8 million and $95.5 million respectively. Despite getting off to a slow start, Snow White has reached another box office milestone, but it remains uncertain whether this will be enough to secure lasting success.
Snow White Has Crossed $200 Million
Only Four Movies Have Gotten That Total This Year So Far
Having graced the silver screen for six consecutive weekends now, I’ve been part of the incredible journey of “Snow White”. It’s not just any fairy tale; it’s a story that has made its mark at the global box office. During this period, it went head-to-head with several contenders, one being the family-friendly video game adaptation, “A Minecraft Movie”. Unlike my journey, “A Minecraft Movie” has managed to hold onto the top 5 positions at the domestic box office every weekend since its release. Interestingly, after three weekends in theaters, I slipped out of the top 5 and found myself at the no. 8 spot on the weekend of April 11 to 13.
According to Box Office Mojo, the movie “Snow White” has surpassed a significant box office figure, now earning more than $200 million globally. This sum includes an $85.7 million made in domestic sales and $114.4 million from international markets. However, it’s unfortunate to note that this milestone barely covers a fraction of the film’s budget, which is estimated to be between $240-270 million.
What This Means For Snow White
The Movie Is Still Bound To Lose Money
Reaching the $200 million mark is significant because only four movies in 2025 have managed to do so thus far. However, this figure is still lower than the budget, suggesting that it’s unlikely for “Snow White” to reach the point where it recoups its costs. Given that the summer movie season is approaching and films usually need to earn at least twice or more their budget to break even, it appears that “Snow White” will not only end up losing money but could potentially cost Disney hundreds of millions in losses by the time it wraps up.
