Snow White Remake: 1.9 IMDb Rating is Breathtakingly Bad

It seems things have taken a turn for the worse in the case of the latest Snow White reboot. A quick glance at its rating on IMDb reveals that it’s currently among the lowest-rated films ever made.

Prior to the premiere of the movie, things seemed less than favorable. The choice of Rachel Zegler for the leading role as the princess sparked controversy as being too “progressive,” production faced several setbacks such as the SAG-AFTRA strike, and its final budget soared well beyond $270 million.

Remarkably, there’s no logical explanation for Snow White receiving such poor reviews to the extent that its IMDb rating is among the lowest ever recorded. If this movie was the Titanic, it would have only just collided with the iceberg – the worst is yet to come.

However, how do we tackle this messy launch situation? It appears there’s a lot more beneath the surface, requiring some clarification.

Snow White review bombed as IMDb score plummets

Glancing at IMDb currently, you’ll notice that the Snow White remake isn’t receiving the best reviews with a score of just 1.9 out of 10. Given IMDb’s list of the lowest-rated films ever, our fairytale heroine comfortably finds herself among the top 15 lowest-rated movies. That hurts!

Currently, the film is associating with Disaster Movie, From Justin to Kelly, and Race 3 due to approximately 23,000 one-star reviews. However, its reputation wasn’t always as poor as it is now.

The movie didn’t quite meet the predicted earnings at the domestic box office, yet it hasn’t flopped entirely. It managed to earn $44.3 million domestically and a total of $87.3 million worldwide, falling short of the expected $100 million.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience rating for Snow White is 73%, while the critical rating stands at 43%. This isn’t fantastic, but it’s also not horrible. Interestingly, these scores are significantly higher compared to those on IMDb.

It appears that certain sections of the movie’s IMDb page are intentionally being altered, such as the violence and gore rating. At present, all content warnings are marked as extreme, with approximately 500 individuals casting their votes on each.

Someone had fun with the Snow White IMDB page

“A fan on Twitter commented about the new Snow White movie, saying it received a 2/10 rating on IMDb. This is similar to Dragon Ball Evolution’s score of 2.5/10. It seems they are questioning just how poor a production has to be to earn such low ratings.”

As I chimed in, “Let me toss this thought out here. The film ‘Cats’ has a higher rating on IMDb than the latest Snow White movie. You heard it right, folks – it’s ‘Cats’!

Why is Snow White getting bad reviews?

To clarify, it’s not just one specific factor causing Snow White’s decline, but a combination of several issues instead.

Rachel Zegler

As a passionate gamer, I couldn’t help but feel a bit taken aback when Zegler mentioned her views on the original animation of a beloved game. She described it as “extremely dated,” which felt like a slap in the face to long-time fans who cherish its classic charm. Then, at Disney’s D23 event last year, she shared that the character won’t be waiting for a prince or dreaming about true love. Instead, she’ll be striving to become the strong leader her father believed she could be, if she was fearless, fair, brave, and true. While I appreciate the intent behind this modernization, I can’t help but miss the original narrative that brought us together in the first place.

Additionally, along with a “Stop Woke Ideology” campaign on social media, platforms such as the Daily Wire swiftly criticized this action, even creating their own counter-woke film as retaliation.

Following Donald Trump’s 2024 election win, she posted on Instagram expressing her wish that his supporters would never experience tranquility. Later, she expressed remorse by stating on Instagram: “The spread of hatred and anger has led us further from peace and comprehension, and I apologize for my part in perpetuating the harmful dialogue.

Gal Gadot

It’s not just Zegler who’s faced criticism; prior to its release, there were rumors of tension between Zegler and Gadot. Zegler has expressed support for Palestine during Israel’s invasion of Gaza, while Gadot has a background in the Israeli military. This has led to criticism against Gadot on social media, with some fans even advocating for a boycott of the film. In fact, protesters from both sides disrupted Gadot’s Walk of Fame ceremony in Hollywood before its premiere.

The seven dwarves

Firstly, there are the dwarves as characters. Actor Peter Dinklage, who has a real-life condition known as achondroplasia, criticized the remake, calling it “backwards.” Despite praising Zegler’s casting, he questioned the decision to tell the story of seven dwarves living in a cave again. He asked, “What on earth are you doing, man?”

The focus shifts to the dwarves as characters in this remake. Peter Dinklage, an actor with achondroplasia, criticized the production, labeling it as regressive despite praising Zegler’s casting. He expressed his confusion about retelling the story of seven dwarves dwelling in a cave once more, asking, “What exactly are you thinking, man?

As a reaction, Disney shared a statement expressing they have been discussing with members from the dwarfism community to ensure they don’t perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

Instead of using CGI, other viewers criticized the decision to depict “magical creatures” in the production, suggesting that they could have used dwarf actors instead, a controversy that also surrounded the 2014 release of Snow White and the Huntsman.

Although Disney has aimed to avoid additional controversy, it significantly reduced the rollout of its Snow White remake. Instead of hosting a grand international media blitz, they limited events to a U.S. premiere and the debut of an original song at a castle in Spain, which was the muse for the original animation.

Right now, you have a chance to catch Snow White in cinemas! Additionally, if you’re interested, here are some of the greatest animated films ever made for your viewing pleasure. Notably, I recommend checking out the top 15 movies currently streaming on Disney+. Enjoy!
