‘SNL’ Jokes About Chappell Roan Fan Harassment With Bowen Yang Dressed as Celebrity Hippo Moo Deng: ‘We Both Deserve Patience and Grace’

As a supporter of Chappell Roan, I can’t help but see the parallels between her and Moo Deng, the viral sensation pygmy hippopotamus, both of whom have found themselves under the microscope of public scrutiny. It’s heartening to see how Moo Deng, in her SNL appearance, has taken a stand for herself and for Chappell, emphasizing the importance of boundaries, mental health, and personal space.

On the “Weekend Update” segment of Saturday Night Live, Bowen Yang morphed into Moo Deng, the Thai pygmy hippopotamus who’s been a viral hit lately. He utilized this opportunity to highlight similarities between Moo and pop sensation Chappell Roan.

On “Weekend Update,” host Colin Jost mentioned that people have been tossing bananas and seafood at internet sensation Moo Deng in her zoo habitat, hoping to catch her attention. “Let’s hear from Moo Deng herself,” said Jost, as Yang appeared in costume. He updated the audience about the hippo’s hectic life, saying, “Over the last 10 weeks, I’ve been running around, munching lettuce, and trying to grab water from a hose.

Moo Deng spoke about her similar situation with Roan, who shared that she needs time off for health reasons. “I’ve reached a stage where I have to establish some limits,” Yang expressed to Jost and Che.

Yang added, “Reminder: women owe you nothing. When I’m in my enclosure tripping over stuff, biting my trainer’s knee, I am at work. That is the project. Do not yell my name or expect a photo just because I’m your parasocial bestie or because you appreciate my talent.”

When Jost inquired about Moo Deng’s unique ability, Yang replied, “He possesses a flexible and elastic physique that is springy. Previously, hippos in the media were either characters from the ‘Hungry Hungry Hippos’ board game or Jada Pinkett Smith in ‘Madagascar.’ However, now, Moo Deng is the beloved hippo’s favorite hippo,” he stated, alluding to a shared joke between Chappell Roan fans. (Roan is known as “the favorite artist’s favorite artist.”)

Jost remarked, ‘It sure feels overwhelming with the world’s gaze upon you,’ to which Yang responded, ‘Frankly, it can feel as if I’m living in a fishbowl sometimes, just an exhibit for people to observe.’ Jost playfully added, ‘Guess that’s the life you chose.’

As a film enthusiast, I find myself reminiscent of Chappell Roan’s recent life journey. Have you had the chance to get acquainted with her? I’ve been around for a while now, so it’s safe to say that I’m well-versed in who Chappell Roan is. And let me tell you, she deserves all the time she needs to focus on her mental health – something our society should be promoting more often, not just for young women, but for everyone. It seems like we often put people on a pedestal, only to tear them down later, and that’s exactly what happened to Chappell Roan, unfortunately – all because she dared to speak up about her struggles.

Moo Deng subsequently declared her decision to abstain from offering support in the upcoming presidential race, another gesture that mirrors Roan’s situation, as he too has faced criticism for failing to endorse a candidate.

On November 2nd, Roan is set to appear for the first time on “Saturday Night Live”. She’ll be joining John Mulaney as the show’s host and will also serve as the night’s musical entertainer.

This year, Roan, who’s been widely recognized for hits like “Good Luck, Babe!” and “Hot to Go!”, has been in the news due to her remarks on fans who she considers as entitled and intrusive, going as far as stalking and harassing her. Recently, she released a video statement defending her neutrality regarding the presidential election, stating that there are issues on both sides. A day later, she elaborated, expressing support for Kamala Harris because she strongly dislikes Donald Trump, but also criticizing certain actions within the Democratic party. Yesterday, Roan announced the cancellation of her performances at the All Things Go music festivals in New York and Washington D.C., citing that she’s unable to perform due to feeling overwhelmed by recent events.

Roan mentioned that he’s currently facing numerous priorities and requires a short break to focus on his well-being. He aims to deliver top-notch performances and appreciates your understanding. See you again soon, with love!
