A fresh pope has moved into the Vatican, but Saturday Night Live (SNL) kept things discreet; they didn’t perform their traditional “Da Pope” skit nor did they assign a cast member to portray Pope Leo. It seems SNL is deliberating its own election process. Nevertheless, the new American pope was still the target of jokes during Weekend Update. Colin Jost started off by expressing pride, only for it to be a sin, followed by embarrassment. He jokingly pointed out that the pope hails from Chicago’s South Side, suggesting he’s got his hands up in a familiar gesture. Jost also made light of another religious figure from Chicago, hinting at concerns that the new pope might be Kanye West. In conclusion, Jost humorously noted that there’s no “woke Pope,” disappointing PopeCrave: “Conservatives are already grumbling that this pope is too progressive. A 69-year-old man from Chicago can hardly be considered overly woke. It’s not as if he declared, ‘I am Pope Leo XIV, He/Him.’ The truth is, there are no woke Catholics; if you identify as a woke Catholic, you’re simply not a Catholic anymore.
