SNL fans hail presidential election candidates as “greatest casting in history”

As a long-time SNL enthusiast and connoisseur of political satire, I must say that this season is shaping up to be a masterpiece! The casting choices for the 2024 U.S. presidential candidates are nothing short of brilliant, particularly the inclusion of Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris and Andy Samberg as her husband Douglas Emhoff.

As Saturday Night Live kicks off its 50th season, viewers are raving about the portrayals of the potential 2024 U.S. presidential candidates in the skits.

In the lead-up to the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, finding common ground or a good chuckle might seem challenging. However, Saturday Night Live (SNL) is once again gracing our TV screens to lighten the mood and foster agreement.

On September 28, the series kicked off Season 50 by introducing its main characters, portraying important political figures in future episodes, during the show’s opening scene.

The skit began with the reintroduction of SNL alumni Maya Rudolph as Kamala Harris and the first time inclusion of Andy Samberg as her husband Douglas Emhoff in what one fan called the “greatest casting in #SNL history.”

Although Rudolph has been playing the role of Harris for SNL since 2019, many fans praised her for nailing the vice president’s cadence as one viewer posted on X/Twitter, “Oh my word… Maya Rudolph’s voice work of the @VP has gotten INCREDIBLE. I did a double take on some of those lines because it sounded SO much like her. #SNL.”

This opening scene additionally included former SNL stars like Dana Carvey portraying current U.S. President Joe Biden, comedian Jim Gaffigan taking on the role of Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, and present SNL actors James Austin Johnson and Bowen Yang representing Donald Trump and vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance respectively.

Despite the significant buzz surrounding Andy Samberg’s comeback on SNL, many viewers applauded Bowen Yang’s presence in the limited cast. One enthusiastic fan even commented, “The individual at SNL who proposed Bowen Yang play J.D. Vance should get a raise for such a brilliant idea.

Similar to Rudolph returning to his familiar role, Johnson has assumed the part previously played by Alec Baldwin, who portrayed the president during his term in office.

For this election cycle, the portrayal of Donald Trump by Jim Carrey as President Johnson on SNL will undergo a significant change compared to previous seasons. Lorne Michaels, the show’s creator, explained to The Hollywood Reporter that “James, who I think is brilliant, played Trump as a less influential character, like the man talking in the back of the hardware store. This portrayal worked because it felt current. However, we will need to reimagine the character once more, as you saw during the debate.

The six actors will keep playing their roles in Saturday Night Live shows up until the U.S. Election on November 5, 2024, with each actor’s involvement varying from episode to episode.
