‘SNL’: Andy Samberg and Mikey Day Wear Beetlejuice Costumes and Join Host Michael Keaton for Monologue

As a cinephile with over four decades of film history under my belt, it’s always a delight to witness the return of a beloved figure like Michael Keaton. His recent appearance on Saturday Night Live was not just a nostalgic trip down memory lane but a testament to his timeless charm and versatility as an actor.

This week, Michael Keaton made a comeback as the host of “Saturday Night Live”, making it his fourth time in the role at Studio 8H, having initially appeared on the show back in 1982. With enthusiasm, he declared, “I’m thrilled to be here again for the 50th season of ‘Saturday Night Live!'” He also shared memories about where his career was when the show first aired.

As a film critic reminiscing about the past, I can’t help but draw parallels between my time as a Production Assistant on ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’ and Saturday Night Live in the ’70s. Believe it or not, these two seemingly disparate shows share more similarities than one might initially think – both were rich with puppets, for instance. However, I must clarify that the ’70s environment was markedly different, as there was a substantial amount of cocaine use prevalent among the crew. Yet, Fred Rogers stood tall as the epitome of what one would expect him to be.

Afterward, Keaton mentioned the latest movie release titled “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” where he once again played his character from the 1988 film named “Beetlejuice.

As Halloween approaches, it’s clear that many children will be out trick-or-treating dressed as Beetlejuice, and he found it endearing. He even joked about how adults sometimes imitate his famous character for costumes: “Often times, it’s men in their 40s, but I wouldn’t necessarily call that adorable.

After donning his own Beetlejuice attire featuring green hair and striped suit, Mikey Day approached Keaton. “May I address you as Mike?” Day inquired. “Beetlejuice is my all-time favorite, could you possibly say ‘It’s showtime?’ – a nod to the iconic quote from the movie?

In all truthfulness,” Keaton admitted, “I can’t recall exactly how I put it.” And then, Andy Samberg entered, similarly costumed as Beetlejuice.

Samberg admitted, “Indeed, yes I did.” He then explained to Mike, “You see, I’ve got a bit of history with this place. Over the course of my illustrious career, I attempted numerous times to include my sketch in the program, but each time I was unsuccessful.

Keaton asked, “Instead of saying BJ, just call him Beetlejuice,” to which Samberg responded, mimicking the movie’s theme, “I don’t want to hear his name! If you say it three times, I’ll disappear.

Spotting Sarah Sherman, Keaton remarked, “It seems Sherman’s hiding in the wings… We can’t afford another Beetlejuice right now. However, Sherman, dressed in a striped gown, reassured him, saying, “Oh no, thank you very much. I simply always dress like this.

Keaton noted, ‘You’re using a lot of lines from the initial film.’ Have any of you watched the sequel?” (Informal: “Hey, you guys are quoting a lot of lines from the first flick, right? Did you catch the second one?”)

They replied that it wasn’t ready yet, but it was scheduled, and then they urged Keaton to use his distinctive voice. He agreed, and in character as Beetlejuice, he exclaimed, ‘We have a fantastic show lined up for you tonight!’ He also announced Billie Eilish as the evening’s musical guest.
