approaching: Spoilers for the movie “Sinners”
In the movie “Sinners,” Wunmi Mosaku, who plays Smoke’s estranged wife Annie, explains a crucial moment that led to Smoke’s fate after his traumatic night ordeal. Set in the Mississippi Delta during 2025, the film follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack as they attempt to establish their dream business, but are confronted by terrifying creatures instead. The supernatural guidance provided by Mosaku’s character Annie offers the group their best chance against the vampires in the movie’s ensemble cast.
During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, actor Mosaku delved into the unbreakable bond between Annie and Smoke that endured through every hardship they encountered in life. He elaborated on how their tight relationship developed even at their initial encounters, stating that the instance when Smoke released the mojo bag Annie had given him was a deliberate move – partly due to guilt and partly because he no longer felt the need for the safety she had provided him throughout their years together. For a deeper understanding of Mosaku’s thoughts on this subject, take a look at his complete explanation below:
In your chemistry test with Michael B. Jordan, the focus was on Annie and Smoke’s seven-page reunion, which went so smoothly that you were immediately offered the role. Since then, you’ve mentioned that Annie is a protector, teacher, mother figure, lover, and friend to Elijah. Indeed, that reunion scene seems to showcase all those roles, doesn’t it?
100% perplexed, I can’t fathom how Ryan managed such a feat. In the initial stage of the scene, one of the young girls was seven, the same age Annie and Smoke’s daughter would have been. The visuals and introspection left me speechless, and I just can’t wrap my head around it. What intrigues me is that Smoke’s mojo bag seemed to be effective. Over their years together, it has always functioned, and their love, so profound and interconnected, made Annie’s spell successful. She poured all her strength into his mojo bag, and he had to remove it for the spell to conclude. Her love for him is not just a feeling but also a source of her power and magic.
I wanted to inquire if he had taken it off prior to the last shootout, just so he could be with her and their child afterwards.
That’s exactly how I understood it. He’s all alone now. He lost his brother, his partner, and his baby. So, what’s the purpose in shielding her anymore? There’s a hint of guilt too, as he wonders why this situation benefits him while others seem to suffer.
What Mosaku’s Comments Reveal About Smoke’s Journey In Sinners
Against All Odds, He Still Fought To Control His Fate
Mosaku’s interpretation of the finale highlights the sorrowful aspect of the conclusion in Sinners, as Smoke’s return home and final attempt to realize a dream are met with bloodshed and fire. Regardless of surviving war and successfully outsmarting two prominent Chicago criminal gangs, the dreams of Smoke and Stack’s Juke Joint were doomed without Remmick’s (Jack O’Connell) assistance, as he was honest about the local Ku Klux Klan’s intent to ambush them and their companions. Despite his faith in and longing for power and dominance, his chances were always slim from the start.
Despite numerous obstacles standing in his way, Smoke manages to assert dominance even during the darkest hours. He keeps his word to Annie by executing her to thwart Remmick’s influence once she’s bitten, all while maintaining his personal principles by sparing the vampire Stack. Though Mosaku underscores Smoke’s unfortunate end, there is also a hint of sweetness in the fact that discarding the bag enables him to reunite with his family and depart on his own terms.
Our Thoughts On Mosaku’s Smoke Reveal
Despite His Tougher Side, Smoke Is One Of Sinners’ Most Emotionally Driven Characters
In the film “Sinners“, while Sammie (Miles Catton) takes the lead role, it’s challenging not to recognize Smoke as a key secondary character. From the start, his blend of pragmatism and ruthlessness is contrasted with a desire to act morally, even in the darkest moments. This complexity in Smoke’s character, brilliantly portrayed by Mosaku, adds an additional layer of emotional depth to the movie’s survival storyline.
