As a connoisseur of horror films who has weathered countless sleepless nights due to the chilling effects of movies like The Mist, Drag Me to Hell, and Eden Lake, I must say that Smile 2’s ending belongs in the pantheon of the most terrifying cinematic conclusions. Naomi Scott’s portrayal of Skye Riley is a testament to her acting prowess, as she delivers a heart-wrenching performance that leaves you questioning reality itself.
In the final moments of Smile 2, there’s no victory but rather a blood-curdling, scream-filled capitulation to some overarching entity. Witnessed by countless spectators, it’s an unsettlingly gruesome scene that left us terrified. We had a chat with Naomi Scott about its deeper implications.
Among the greatest horror films ever made are titles like “The Mist,” “Drag Me to Hell,” “The Wicker Man,” “Eden Lake,” and “The Descent.” What makes these movies exceptional is that they share a unique trait: their endings are not only among the most chilling in the horror genre, but also stand out as some of the most harrowing conclusions found in cinema as a whole.
The ending of Smile 2 resides in a particular circle of horror, one that neither acknowledges nor alleviates your fear or tension – instead, it intensifies the dread before plunging you into the stark vision of night, forcing you to grapple with the haunting images etched in your mind until they slowly dissipate (and, inevitably, resurface like a chill).
As a dedicated gamer immersed in the world of Skye Riley’s sequel, I find myself increasingly drawn to the possibility that our embattled popstar might emerge victorious. In a chilling twist, she eludes the hospital after the entity compels her to take her mother’s life. Seeking solace and understanding, she stumbles upon Morris, an enigmatic figure well-versed in the entity’s nature. His startling proposition: if he ends my existence, the entity will vanish since it would no longer have a reason to persist.
No worries, as he’ll bring her back to life shortly – it should only take a couple of minutes, which gives us ample time to deal with the beast.
Is everyone cursed at the end of Smile 2?
Let’s consider a possibility, however. Suppose Morris wasn’t a genuine character but rather an entity manipulating Skye all along? This is what Scott suggested when speaking to TopMob, expressing that she had no specific theories regarding Morris. “It’s fascinating when people ask me questions about the movie as if it’s just a story being consumed,” she remarked. “For me, it’s challenging to separate my personal connection with the story from its objective interpretation.
“He’s real to Skye, that’s all that matters to me.”
Regardless, it doesn’t work. Skye tries to use Morris’ serum to inject herself and stop the monster as it tries to attack her, but it quickly becomes clear the whole thing has been a hallucination. She wakes up in Madison Square Garden, lucid enough to see that she didn’t murder her mother, before the entity rips open her mouth and crawls inside.
In a chilling scene, Skye rises from her seat with a hauntingly ecstatic expression on her face. She then ends her life dramatically by thrusting the microphone into her own eye, shocking everyone present in the arena.
In simpler terms, are we saying that everyone in the crowd is destined for a tragic and gruesome fate?” She replied, “Well, theoretically speaking, yes… In terms of the rules governing this entity, they seem to be afflicted by what’s called the ‘Smile Curse’.
Scott undoubtedly has her unique queries and opinions regarding the movie’s finale, however, speculating about Smile 3 is “beyond her authority or expertise.
As a gamer, I often find myself doubting the quality of my own ideas, fearing they won’t measure up against others’. You know what I mean? I yearn for an element of surprise, something truly unique – a fresh concept that sets the stage for something entirely new and distinct from anything we’ve encountered before.
However, since it’s not an idea I personally nurtured, I believe it would be best for someone else to carry it forward instead.
In simple terms, Parker Finn, who directed both films in the Smile series, expressed enthusiasm about numerous intriguing directions the storyline might take moving forward.
As a die-hard fan, I’m thrilled by the thought that upcoming versions of Smile might push boundaries, veer wildly off course, and become increasingly absurd and unpredictable, as I shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
To me, what makes Smile stand out is its deeply personal and character-focused narrative, which keeps the story grounded even when the setting expands. It’s crucial for us to preserve this human connection within our stories as they unfold.
