In a lead-up to the release of Smile 2, director Parker Finn discusses the technique behind the actors’ portrayal of the film’s signature chilling grin from the original Smile movie, which significantly contributes to its genuine terror.
The second installment of “Smile” is almost here, promising a fresh perspective on its subject matter. This time, the story centers around a popular singer named Sky Riley, who finds herself intertwined with the malevolent force that has haunted the horror film franchise.
Director Parker Finn not only pens the script but also ensures the actors portray his signature, charming grin convincingly.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the latest film to The Hollywood Reporter, Finn stated, “On some occasions, the actors arrive well-prepared, as if they’ve been practicing intensely at home, staring at themselves in the mirror. Other times, they require a bit more guidance.
The coaching involves the writer-director explaining that the expression should appear natural yet friendly. It’s important not to overdo it or force the facial muscles excessively. Instead, focus on separating the smile from the eyes, and pay attention to the angle of your head.
Instead of adopting a specific pose such as a head tilt or the ‘Kubrick Stare,’ we found inspiration in these elements and primarily focused on mastering the art of filmmaking.
In The Shining, Jack Nicholson’s intense gaze, often referred to as ‘Kubrick Stare’, is a well-known example. Given this, it seems not by chance that Jack Nicholson’s son, Ray Nicholson, has been given the role of “smiling” in this sequel.
