Smash 6 rumors intensify after new Ultimate patch & GameCube controller reproduction

As a seasoned gamer with decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel the familiar thrill of anticipation as whispers about the next Super Smash Bros installment start to circulate. The GameCube controller re-emergence and that stealth patch on Ultimate have me wondering if we’re about to embark on another epic crossover adventure.

There’s growing excitement about the potential new installment of Super Smash Bros, fueled by a secret update for Smash Ultimate and rumors suggesting that GameCube controllers are being re-manufactured.

Since the character Sora from Kingdom Hearts was announced as the last DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, fans have speculated about the direction the series might take after the departure of game creator Masahiro Sakurai.

Word on the street suggests that rumors have been circulating following Sakurai’s comment as a YouTuber, stating he finds it hard to envision a Smash game without his involvement and expressing interest in collaborating with Nintendo on a future edition of the series.

As a die-hard fan, I’m eagerly speculating whether Smash 6 will be an entirely fresh take on the platform fighting genre or a refined version of Smash Ultimate akin to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Recently, I’ve noticed some tantalizing hints that could suggest the game is in development.

On October 11, according to EventHubs, a Resetera user observed a possible shipping document mentioning a new GameCube controller, which has been an essential part of the Super Smash Bros series, since its debut in Melee (2001).

The controller employs a TRW1230 motor reminiscent of the one used in the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Switch Online controller, implying that Nintendo might introduce some GameCube games through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, or perhaps it’s part of a different plan altogether.

It’s worth noting that on October 8th, a minor update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released. Despite the absence of any balance adjustments, players speculate that this could be an indication that work is being done on a new game.

It’s quite possible, though speculative, that the upcoming Smash game is currently under active development. The ongoing updates for Smash Ultimate might well be laying the groundwork for this new project.

On platform X, someone suggested, with a hint of speculation, “Perhaps it’s not far-fetched to think that the next Smash game is currently under active development. The ongoing patches for Ultimate are strong evidence that they’re expanding upon it.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice that it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen an update for the game – all the way back to February 2024, with the last update before that happening in 2021. This gap in updates, to my eyes, strongly suggests that the talented folks over at Smash Bros Team (Namco Studio’s 2 & S) are once again immersed in creating the next installment in this epic series.

Last night, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate received a minor update, marking its first update since February 2024 and following a lengthy hiatus without any updates since 2021. This pattern strongly suggests that the team behind Smash Bros (Namco Studio’s 2 & S) is actively developing the next game in the series.

Previously, job postings for the rebranded Smash development team, now known as Studio 2/Studio S, hinted at their search for seasoned professionals skilled in action games, specifically those with expertise in the ‘side-scrolling’ genre.

While nothing’s set in stone at this point, given that speculation about the Switch 2 is running high, it might not surprise us if a fresh Smash Bros. game were unveiled concurrently with the launch of the new console.
