As someone who has spent years studying and reporting on the darker corners of humanity, I must say that the story of The Family International left me utterly disturbed and disheartened. Having heard countless tales of abuse and exploitation, this particular narrative stands out as one of the most horrific and heartbreaking.

If you enjoy exploring intriguing and mysterious topics, you might find Nick Crowley’s latest documentary interesting. Known for creating the popular mini-documentary smartschoolboy9, he delves deep into what is arguably the darkest children’s TV show ever produced.

In September, the story about smartschoolboy9 swept across the internet, garnering over 10 million views on Crowley’s video alone. A community forum, or subreddit, was established to uncover the true identity behind the person posing as children, with the ultimate goal of seeing this individual brought to justice.

Despite popular speculation suggesting him as either David Alter or David London, we’ve yet to uncover his true identity. Interestingly, the smartschoolboy9 Reddit page has been taken down. However, one fact remains undeniable: this mystery is arguably the most unsettling online enigma in recent times.

Apart from having an abundance of subjects to delve into, Crowley recently released a video featuring five truly chilling real-life tales. Currently, he’s focusing on ‘The Darkest Children’s TV Show Ever Produced’, but be advised that some viewers might find the content disturbing.

Life With Grandpa is even scarier than smartschoolboy9

The TV series under discussion goes by the name “Life With Grandpa”. At first glance, it appears to be a puppet show that revolves around its elderly male protagonist and his family. This program was developed in the mid-1980s and employed skits and songs as a means to impart life lessons to its young viewers, with those lessons being based on Christian principles.

Before discovering the identity of the creator (which I’ll discuss momentarily), this show is undeniably unsettling. The lifelike puppets give off an intense eerie vibe, reminiscent of the uncanny valley, and certain teachings are downright chilling.

In various instances, Grandpa and his family advocate for corporal punishment, employing what appears to be a whip-like instrument. The depiction of women in Life With Grandpa, unfortunately, raises concerns as they are often portrayed merely as domestic help, expected to perform household chores like washing dishes and sweeping floors.

It appears that the creators expressed a strong preference for divine intervention over medical professionals and contemporary medicine. However, the sexually implicit skits are particularly troubling.

The strangest and memorable incident features Grandpa working alongside a robot that had artificial human-like breasts attached – his supposed romantic partner in this scenario.

According to Crowley, it’s incredibly strange – one of the oddest moments he’s witnessed on children’s television. This particular scene seemed to depict Grandpa’s wife and women in general as being similar to robots.

While contrasting with the disrespectful tune from before, this track openly portrays an inappropriate theme. It depicts a robot with breast features and even includes scenes of Grandpa touching them.

The YouTube personality continues to underscore the lyrics, which are equally unsettling: “He inserts his key and that’s when she shows enthusiasm.

Just as I found myself drawn into the Keep Sweet: Pray and Obey documentary, Life with Grandpa seems to subtly instill a similar lesson for kids: “Follow my guidance, trust and respect me.

Once you know who’s behind the TV show, you’ll be shocked but not surprised that it ever got made.

David Berg and the messed up teachings of the Children of God cult

The TV series was developed from a series of books with illustrations, all of which were originated by The Family International (TFI), a well-known group.

Back in 1968, I became part of an extraordinary movement initiated by David Brandt Berg. Initially, it was a devout group, dedicated to the propagation of salvation. We firmly believed that the end times were upon us and the wider world, which we referred to as ‘The System’, couldn’t be relied upon.

Via this communication, he successfully persuaded the gathering to depart from the United States, causing a multitude of TFI members to disperse worldwide.

As time went by, TFI grew more and more explicit, starting with the older group members who were encouraged by Berg to practice polyamory.

In the 1970s, he introduced a novel method called “Flirty Fishing,” where he encouraged female participants to visit bars and enter into sexual encounters with strangers for payment, with the aim of attracting new followers.

During this period, Berg grew progressively eccentric. He often shared his thoughts with his followers through what he called “Mo Letters,” several of which propagated troubling ideologies. Additionally, he took on various titles such as King, Moses, and Grandpa.

In 1978, the group initially known as the Children of God changed its name to the Family of Love. Yet, David Berg’s understanding of ‘love’, as he applied it within this group, was far from loving.

As a dedicated gamer, let me tell you, David Berg wasn’t your average guy. Sex was like an obsession for him, something that constantly influenced his thoughts and teachings, to the point where it seemed to be everywhere in his work. This is according to Crowley, who shared this intriguing insight in a chilling YouTube documentary.

The situation became even more dismal when Berg started disseminating his Mo Letters, advocating for children’s participation in intimate relationships.

He thought that kids should learn about this way of life from the moment they’re born, if not earlier, just as Flirty Fishing is compulsory, so he said.

Because of the instructions from TFI and the persuasive influence of the group’s resources, such as “Life With Grandpa”, the kids who joined the cult were conditioned to follow orders.

The case of “Davidito”

The most troubling illustration of TFI’s mistreatment is seen in the story of Ricky Rodriguez, depicted as Davidito in “Life with Grandpa.” Ricky was born to his mother Karen Zerby (also known as Maria) following a Flirty Fishing incident.

Maria served as Berg’s spouse, and they raised Ricky as their adoptive child. Right from the start, he was nurtured by his parents and the community with the intention that he would eventually succeed Berg as their leader.

Apart from enduring severe sexual abuse during his entire childhood at the hands of multiple adult females, often called “nannies,” this abuse was also meticulously documented in writing and photographs within ‘The Davidito Book’, which was published by TFI.

Despite Ricky’s successful escape from the cult as an adult, the emotional scars ran deep and became unbearable for him. In 2005, he produced a suicide note detailing his plan to infiltrate the cult once more with the intention of taking revenge on his abusers by killing them.

At this point, Berg had passed away in 1994, but the organization he founded, Children of God, persisted under the leadership of his mother. Eventually, he violently ended Angela Smith’s life – a significant figure among his abusers who also served as a nanny – before taking his own life.

Is The Family International still going?

In spite of a mountainous amount of proof and survivors openly recounting their experiences of abuse, The Family International has yet to face legal consequences, and remarkably, the organization remains active in modern times.

There are many reasons for this, one of which will no doubt leave you feeling infuriated. Because Berg convinced the members to disperse around the world, it’s very difficult to prosecute them due to differing legal systems.

Moreover, the organization abandoned their illicit sexual behaviors during the 1980s, changing their name to The Family International. This transformation has made it challenging to prosecute them for past offenses, particularly as many fall under the statute of limitations.

Additionally, it’s challenging to locate several followers as they’ve altered their names and personas, making identification difficult.

Remarkably, TFI continues to operate today, identifying as a global online community of approximately 75 nations, dedicated to spreading the message of divine love by reaching out to others.

Karen Zerby is also known for maintaining an active website, where she’s titled as the “jointly spiritual and administrative leader” of the Family International. Notably, as Crowley highlights, there have been no recent sightings or photographs of her in public since the year 2010.

Viewers left “disturbed” by Life with Grandpa

Ever since its upload on YouTube, Crowley’s video about the case has garnered over a million views and sparked numerous comments from concerned spectators. One viewer even stated, “It was more disturbing than I had anticipated.

Great admiration goes to those who bravely voiced their opinions, particularly Davida and Ricky. I imagine it wasn’t simple,” commented one individual, while another exclaimed, “The title of the video is not a jest; what you are about to witness is truly some of the most appalling, wicked, terrifying, malicious, and nauseating content ever recorded on tapes.

Many have expressed shock that the cult is still going, including this person who wrote, “The fact that the cult still exists because they ‘say’ they don’t do that stuff anymore, and that the legal system accepts that promise is mind-blowing.”

One individual stated, “I absolutely understand and cannot judge Ricky for his decisions, his botched scheme, or his actions on that tragic night. Under the circumstances, who wouldn’t struggle with their mental health?

Through his own experiences of abuse since infancy, he felt a growing sense of injustice as he observed that others continued to get away with such mistreatment. Each day that passed, it seemed to him like more and more children were falling victim to this tormenting life.

It was strikingly human of him to confess that breaking and killing his abuser left him feeling even worse, revealing a sense of morality and empathy that the cult members lacked since they were the ones who broke him.
