For those who grew up in the ’90s, Toy Story is likely the first talking toy movie that comes to mind. However, it’s not the only one worth remembering from that era. Small Soldiers, released by Paramount Pictures in 1998, may not have had the same enduring appeal as Toy Story, but it was a fun film in its own right. If you’re fond of Small Soldiers, mark your calendars! On July 22, the movie will be available in a limited edition 4K Blu-ray Steelbook set. This collection includes both a 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray disc, along with a voucher to download the digital version.
Currently, all pre-orders at Walmart have been purchased. It’s advisable to revisit their website as they might restock very soon. On the other hand, Amazon hasn’t started accepting pre-orders yet, but a listing for the item is live on their site, so you should be able to place an order in the near future.
If you can’t get hold of the 4K version or prefer to watch Small Soldiers before July, you might want to consider purchasing the standard Blu-ray edition available on Amazon instead, which is currently on sale at $10.53 (originally priced at $14).
Back in 1998, I found myself utterly captivated by Small Soldiers – a movie that, to me, felt like Gremlins collided with GI Joe, given it was under the masterful direction of Joe Dante. The box office may not have roared for this film, but over time, it’s garnered a passionate fanbase. One reason? The mind-blowing practical effects that leave you spellbound!
In essence, the story revolves around a shipment of action figures laced with high-tech computer chips. These seemingly harmless toys wreak havoc in a peaceful small town, turning everyday life upside down. It’s a rollercoaster ride filled with suspense and excitement!
The surprising part is that the action figures modeled after ‘good guys’ like GI Joe – these enthusiastic toys – create havoc while trying to get rid of their adversaries, the peaceful Gorgonites.
The movie “Small Soldiers” boasted a notable ensemble, with Gregory Smith, Kirsten Dunst, Dick Miller, and Phil Hartman (in his last role) among the live-action stars. Meanwhile, the toy characters were given voices by talented actors like Tommy Lee Jones, Frank Langella, Ernest Borgnine, and George Kennedy. It’s unfortunate that a sequel to “Small Soldiers” was never made, considering it did fairly well financially at the box office. Despite a production budget of around $40 million, the film managed to earn an impressive $71 million globally.
