As a seasoned gamer with decades of Call of Duty under my belt, I must say the news about Sledgehammer Games taking the helm for Call of Duty 2027 has me both excited and apprehensive. Their work on Modern Warfare 3 was outstanding, but I can’t help but wonder if they’ll manage to top Infinity Ward’s upcoming Modern Warfare 4 in 2026.
Recently, news surfaced about Microsoft establishing a committee within Activision to shape the future of the Call of Duty series. Now, it appears that the future may be becoming clearer as new reports hint that Sledgehammer Games could spearhead the development of Call of Duty’s 2027 release.
A well-known leaker known as TheGhostOfHope, who has accurately predicted events in the Call of Duty series before, suggests that the next game developed by Sledgehammer Games will come after Infinity Ward’s title set for 2026. This upcoming title could potentially be Modern Warfare 4, but it might also be a brand new project from Sledgehammer Games, possibly Advanced Warfare 2 or something entirely fresh.
It appears that Sledgehammer Games will be responsible for the next installment of Call of Duty, scheduled for release in 2027. Following this, Infinity Ward is expected to launch MW4 in 2026. For now, it’s important to note that COD2027 is not a sequel to Modern Warfare set one year after the events of its predecessor.

Since Activision launches a new Call of Duty game every year, smaller development teams within the company are working simultaneously on multiple projects to keep up this rhythm. For instance, Sledgehammer Games has lent a helping hand to other Activision studios on numerous Call of Duty productions, all while spearheading development for several games of their own, such as 2023’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III.
In the previous month, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was released to incredible franchise heights, as stated by Activision. They attribute this success to the game’s simultaneous availability on Game Pass, consoles, and PC, pushing the initial 30-day player count, hours played, and matches played to record-breaking levels. The game also introduced unique features like DLC that allows players to transform into sharks. Recently, Activision introduced Ranked Play for Black Ops 6, offering top-tier players the opportunity to compete against each other under identical settings, maps, modes, and weapon rules as Call of Duty’s official esports league.
