Sky Content Boss Zai Bennett Jumps Ship to BBC Studios as Chief Creative Officer

As a devoted cinema enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the television industry, I can’t help but be thrilled about Zai Bennett‘s new role as CEO and chief creative officer at BBC Studios Productions. For the last decade, Bennett has been a driving force at Sky, where he oversaw brands such as Sky Cinema and Sky Kids, and commissioned groundbreaking series like “Chernobyl” and “Gangs of London.”

Zai Bennett, the head of programming at Sky, has decided to join BBC Studios Productions instead. In his new role, he will serve as both the CEO and the chief creative officer.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that in my new role at BBC Studios Productions, I’ll have the privilege of overseeing all U.K. and international production units, as well as our owned labels like Clerkenwell Films (“Baby Reindeer” producers), and invested indies. I’ll be responsible for the entire spectrum of the company’s diverse portfolio, encompassing genres ranging from entertainment and factual to scripted, kids and family, and audio. Additionally, I’ll get to contribute to producing large-scale live events such as last year’s Eurovision Song Contest and the upcoming coronation of King Charles III. It’s an exciting opportunity to be at the heart of creating engaging content for a global audience!

In his new position, Bennett is responsible for creating intellectual property, managing established shows and labels, obtaining fresh commission orders, and broadening BBC Studios’ collection of international TV formats.

I’ve been deeply impressed by Bennet’s accomplishments at Sky over the past decade. Most recently, he held the position of managing director of content, where he was responsible for supervising esteemed brands such as Sky Cinema and Sky Kids, in addition to commissioning top-tier content including “Chernobyl” and “Gangs of London.” This transition comes after a restructuring at Sky earlier this year, during which Sky Studios CEO Cécile Frot-Coutaz broadened her responsibilities within the U.K. and Ireland content sector (excluding sports). As part of this change, Bennet now reports directly to Frot-Coutaz. Previously, he reported to Stephen van Rooyen, who departed from the company in February.

Tom Fussell, CEO of BBC Studios, expressed, “Zai’s ability to take risks and create successful projects is evident. He brings impact and authority, allowing BBC Studios Productions to advance at an even faster pace while preserving the cherished BBC values we all identify with. With his extensive experience in scripted comedy and drama, factual entertainment, documentaries, film, and kids’ programming, as well as his connections to top creative talent, Zai will bolster our production growth plans and help us reach new heights both nationally and internationally. I’m thrilled about his upcoming start.”

Bennett said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining the powerhouse that is BBC Studios Productions this autumn. BBC Studios Productions has a special place in the production ecosystem, upholding the BBC’s unique purpose and values in everything they do, while marrying this with creative commerciality to help export the BBC’s brand around the world as a champion for the highest quality programming in every genre. I couldn’t be more thrilled to join Tom’s team, his ambition and plans for BBC Studios are clear, exhilarating and infectious. I can’t wait to work with him and the world-class creative teams across all the genres and divisions to help keep driving BBC Studios Productions’ growth and stature around the world.”
