As a cinephile with a penchant for crime dramas that delve deep into the human psyche and the dark underbelly of society, I can’t help but be thrilled by the news of RTL+ Germany acquiring exclusive rights to “Mocro Maffia: Gangs of Amsterdam.” Having had the privilege of witnessing the rise and fall of many on-screen criminal empires, I must say that this Dutch hit series promises a gripping tale of power, betrayal, and the complexities of friendship.

Gangs of Amsterdam,” originally produced by Skoop Media based in Amsterdam.

Streamz, a Belgian streaming platform, has acquired the rights for “Mocro Maffia’s” sixth and final season, as well as renewing the licenses for the show’s first five seasons, under a broader deal.

Additionally, Streamz has obtained exclusive ownership for the movie “Taxi,” a spin-off from the series, along with Season 2 of the suspenseful series “Sleepers” – focusing on a corrupt cop grappling with his own allegiance and ethical standards. Also, they have secured rights for the true crime documentary mini-series “The Hash King, My Father’s Story.

As a movie enthusiast penning this review, I’m thrilled to share the news that I’m part of the team bringing the ‘Mocro Maffia’ universe to global audiences. This journey through all six seasons has been nothing short of extraordinary!

Achmed Akkabi’s original concept, born out of his grim yet authentic perspective of the Dutch underworld, ultimately transformed into a groundbreaking and self-standing endeavor.

“Micro Mafia: Gangs of Amsterdam” is an epic crime story that follows the journey of three close friends who start off as minor players in Amsterdam’s criminal underworld. Tragically, their friendship crumbles as they climb the ranks to dominate the city’s lucrative illegal cocaine market, due to destructive envy tearing them apart.

Originally airing in 2018, the sixth season of the series “Mocro Maffia” premiered in its native country this September. Produced by RTL and Videoland, this original production was co-created by Achmed Akkabi, who also appears in the show, along with Dutch production company Fiction Valley, which is a part of Fremantle.

Initially, when we launched ‘Micro Maffia,’ we never anticipated it would become such a significant milestone for our production house. Now, with six accomplished seasons under our belt, numerous spin-offs and an immense fan base, Annemieke van Vliet, producer at Fiction Valley, expressed this appreciation,” she said.

Achmed Akkabi’s initial idea has blossomed into an exceptional project that our team has taken to heart. Their dedication and enthusiasm are the reasons behind its success today. We’re overjoyed to see it gaining recognition internationally, and we eagerly anticipate audiences in Germany, Belgium, and other regions enjoying it as much as our local viewers have. Sharing this story worldwide is a significant achievement we take great pride in.

In addition to securing partnerships for “Sleepers” (Seasons 1 and 2 with RTL Hungary, Season 1 with Encripta), the Finnish thriller series “Evilside” for Latin America, Proximus Belgium for the first season of “Santos,” and all five seasons of the Dutch police action series “Force,” other recent deals for Skoop also include:

The show has gained widespread popularity, prompting discussions about crime, personal identity, and social problems. Its compelling narrative, raw depiction of reality, and exploration of contemporary European issues have made it relatable globally.

The show is part of the growing global interest in local crime dramas due to its engaging, character-centric storylines. In its final season, it introduces surprising partnerships as the characters navigate treacherous betrayals, personal hardships, and the struggle to maintain their domains.

According to Pim van Collem, this upcoming part of the story is anticipated to be darker and more intricate, maintaining the exhilarating action, deep philosophical discussions, and intense emotional struggles that have set it apart. It also delves into fresh perspectives within the constantly changing landscape of Amsterdam’s criminal underworld.

“Sharing this story globally is something we’re incredibly proud of.”
