It’s often said that diamonds last forever, but Nintendo 3DS game cartridges might just outlast them! A player of Pokemon Sun made an astonishing discovery when they unearthed a game cart in their garden that had apparently been missing for several years, only to find it still functioning perfectly.

User Lzzz4 posted on the Pokemon Sun and Moon subreddit: “While cleaning up outside, I stumbled upon this – it seems to be my old copy of Pokemon Sun from middle school. The last time it was saved was November 7, 2018, which might have been when I misplaced it. That means it’s been outside for roughly six years and surprisingly, it still functions.

As I gently slid the dusty cartridge into my Game Boy, seven years of outdoor exposure seemed evident, yet the absence of a game label didn’t faze me. To my delight, the remnants of my adventure in the Alolan region were still intact – my loyal team of Pokémon eagerly awaited to continue their journey. With well over 100 hours under my belt, I had accumulated an impressive array of pocket monsters that promised new challenges and excitement.

Following a lengthy hiatus, the next major addition to the Pokemon series is expected to launch towards the end of this year. Meanwhile, Pokemon Legends Z-A is slated for release in late 2025, and the latest Pokemon Presents livestream provided additional information about upcoming events in various free mobile Pokemon games. Apart from video games, Lego has hinted at its initial Pokemon set, and a sneak peek of this partnership showcased the iconic character, Pikachu.
