‘Sister Act 3’ Needed ‘Readjustments’ After Maggie Smith’s Death, Says Whoopi Goldberg: ‘We’ll Get It Done. It’s a Shift’

As a longtime fan who has witnessed the magical chemistry between Whoopi Goldberg and Maggie Smith in the Sister Act series, I am deeply saddened by the loss of the esteemed British actress. The news of her passing leaves a gaping hole in the world of film, particularly for those who have been captivated by her unparalleled talent and wit.

In a chat on “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” comedian and actress Whoopi Goldberg shared updates about the upcoming movie “Sister Act 3.” She explained that the production team had to rethink their strategies due to the unfortunate passing of her fellow cast member, Maggie Smith.

Goldberg mentioned that they’ll need to adjust things due to the departure of Maggie Smith, and they’re determined to carry on. It’s a change in plans, but they’ll make it work.

Goldberg and Smith collaborated on the first “Sister Act” film, released in 1992, and its sequel, titled “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” which came out in 1993. The story revolves around Deloris Van Cartier (Goldberg), who finds herself in a California convent as part of a protective program for witnesses. Smith’s character is the Mother Superior at this convent. The original film garnered $231 million at the box office with an initial budget of just $31 million. In addition to Goldberg, rising stars like Lauryn Hill and Jennifer Love Hewitt appeared in the sequel.

In January 2023, while appearing on “Loose Women,” Goldberg shared that she was keeping the role of Mother Superior for Smith. She explained that they could film wherever was most suitable for the two-time Oscar winner’s schedule.

Actress Maggie Smith, renowned for her roles in “Harry Potter” and “Downton Abbey,” passed away on September 27 at the age of 89. After the news broke, Goldberg posted a photo on Instagram from the original film’s set, featuring herself and Smith. The caption read, “Maggie Smith was an exceptional woman and a phenomenal actress. I’m still in shock that I got to collaborate with such a unique talent. My sincere sympathies go out to her family…Rest In Peace.
