Sirens: The Real Reason Devon Was In Jail Revealed!

In the Netflix series “Sirens“, we first encounter Devon DeWitt (played by Meghann Fahy) upon her release from prison. At first, it’s unclear as to why she’s been incarcerated, much like certain aspects of this show. However, as the narrative unfolds, the reasons behind Devon’s situation, and consequently, details about Simone (Milly Alcock), Michaela (Julianne Moore), and Peter (Kevin Bacon) emerge. By the end of “Sirens“, it becomes clear that Devon’s prison time is connected to her desire for her sister to return to Buffalo, New York.

In the story, Devon embarks on a journey to a wealthy island to locate her estranged sister, Simone, who had become the personal assistant to millionaire philanthropist Michaela Kell. As Devon eventually found Simone, she grew worried that Michaela was running a peculiar cult and that her sister had been drawn deeply into her control. It’s worth noting that Devon’s lifestyle in Sirens wasn’t exactly setting a good example for Simone. The eldest sister urgently sought help from the younger due to her reckless choices making it difficult for them both to care for their father.

In the story Sirens, it’s later disclosed that Devon had been taken into custody for driving while intoxicated shortly before the beginning of episode 1. Furthermore, she displayed aggressive behavior towards a police officer, hurling a can at him in an attempt to evade arrest. When Michaela arrested Devon for trespassing, she found out that this was not her first DUI offense in a short period. This meant that she faced the possibility of a severe punishment, potentially while awaiting a court trial, which could explain why, after several months of unsuccessfully trying to reach Simone, Devon grew so desperate to bring her back home.

Devon realized that if she were to serve a long sentence in prison, there wouldn’t be anyone left to look after her father, Bruce DeWitt. In the early stages of dementia, while he could still manage daily tasks, he was growing more and more disoriented. She hoped that Simone might quit working with Michaela to assist with Bruce, should she find herself unable to do so due to her questionable decisions.

Court Is Likely In Devon’s Future

At the end of Sirens, Devon comes to terms with letting Simone make her own decisions. Since Michaela had been replaced as Mrs. Kell by Simone, she may face severe repercussions. Although this was tough for Devon, she chose the wiser path and decided to depart. She informed Michaela that they would be heading back to Buffalo with their father, and using the $10,000 check, planned on securing a separate residence away from Bruce – some distance to promote her well-being. The possibility of Devon’s jail time due to her two DUIs was not discussed, but it certainly didn’t disappear.

It appears that it’s highly probable that Devon will need to face court, where a judge will make a ruling concerning her future. There’s a chance she could end up in jail, but given her role as Bruce’s main caregiver, the judge might show leniency towards Devon. However, if she does receive a jail sentence, the show “Sirens” has already outlined some alternatives for Bruce. Devon’s paycheck from the Kells could prove useful, and Bruce can continue to receive assistance from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs until Devon regains her freedom and recovers.

It’s certain that Devon won’t seek assistance from Simone following the end of Sirens, regardless of whether she serves jail time or receives a light punishment. Cashing Michaela’s check is an isolated incident, but Devon will refrain from exploiting Simone’s relationship with Peter. In the future, when Simone might find herself in a predicament similar to Michaela and have to restart her life, Devon would likely be prospering.
