After watching shows like “Big Little Lies” and “White Lotus,” I’ve become accustomed to shocking twists in TV storylines. So it was quite unexpected when “Sirens” ended without a violent climax. The ending of “Sirens” serves as a powerful reminder that even the most intense narratives can reflect real-life situations. Despite Michaela and her house being unsettling, they are simply three women, represented by Michaela, Simone, and Devon, struggling to overcome obstacles in their own unique ways.
It’s tough to watch Simone voluntarily step into Michaela’s ornate prison-like situation, isn’t it? Yes, it does make sense.
Throughout her life, Simone has consistently been motivated by a strong desire for self-protection and stability. At the onset of “Siren Song,” she believes she’s achieved that goal. Following Ethan’s fall, which leaves him injured but okay, Simone discloses Michaela’s job promotion to her. In response, Devon confides that Captain Morgan invited her for a month-long sailing trip. After a series of contentious exchanges and irreversible words in the previous episodes, the sisters manage to reconcile. They express remorse, embrace, and it’s heartwarming to witness their reconciliation. However, with an hour left in this episode, it seems unlikely that any of these events will actually come to pass.
Without a doubt, Michaela is directing her excited employees to give away Simone’s belongings to Goodwill. Given that the team is unaware of Simone’s hardships and considering her less than kind behavior towards them, it would be unfair not to acknowledge their joy upon learning about her termination, a desire they have nurtured for quite some time.
At the hospital, Simone remains unaware of Kiki’s vengeful actions. This is also true for Peter, as he’s currently visiting Simone with Captain Morgan, who is taking Devon back to her father. On their journey, against her better judgment, Devon inquires about sailing with him to Palm Beach. He agrees! It’s safe to assume that nothing will spoil their happiness until the gala arrives – at least, not anything dramatic like Ray disappearing and leaving Bruce lost and close to falling off a cliff.
In the meantime, Peter expresses regret to Simone for giving credence to Ethan’s absurd story about reconciling her with her father. Upon regaining consciousness, Ethan starts ranting in a drug-fueled state about a monstrous Simone pushing him off a cliff. He demands that she reveals her true self by showing him her wings, growing increasingly hysterical. (It appears he took the “all themes should revolve around birds” message literally.) Peter firmly commands Ethan to be quiet, which is somewhat appealing, but Simone remains uninterested in entertaining him. After all, why should she? For now, she feels secure with her current situation. However, this illusion shatters when she returns to her room and finds everything neatly packed away – except for the photo of Peter kissing her.
In their concluding interaction, Simone’s scene with Michaela, along with Milly Alcock’s scene with Julianne Moore, is succinct but intense. Instead of being upset about the kiss itself, Kiki appears more distressed by Simone’s secrecy regarding it. Trying to justify her actions, Simone says, “I knew it would break your heart,” and she chooses not to act in ways that cause you pain.” Michaela merely responds with a disapproving “well.” In her desperation, Simone brings up the fact that Peter had an affair with Michaela, suggesting that Michaela should understand. However, Michaela, being a poor manager, counters by asserting that Jocelyn was not her friend, but Simone is her closest friend. With resolve, she adds, “Now you pose a threat to my marriage, and everything I’ve worked hard for is at risk, so you must leave.
Simone is utterly astonished. “Kiki,” she cries tearfully, “you’re just floored me!” Moore manages to convey subtlety as Michaela subtly flickers her face, suggesting at least a hint of acknowledgement that blaming Simone isn’t entirely fair. “I’m truly sorry,” she replies. And for the moment, that seems to be the end of it.
Unaware of the escalating situation unfolding around us, Devon and Bruce are meticulously preparing for an event they likely won’t get to attend anymore. As she suggests setting sail with Captain Morgan, he shows his agreement in a subtle manner. “You don’t owe me anything,” he tells her. Seeing her smile with relief, I can’t help but notice him slip up and call her Simone instead. The moment is spoiled as he comes to the realization that his hold on reality seems to be slipping away again. It almost feels like a reprieve when Missy enters to evict us along with Simone.
Jose swiftly escorts the startled DeWitts directly to the island’s prison, a place where Ray currently resides with Intoxicated Woman, having been discovered bare on the shore earlier. (I can sense your anticipation for a flashback and I sympathize with you.) Following Devon’s outburst against Ray last night, he took a swim and was swept away by a strong undertow. Now, he lays the blame squarely at her feet. “You are the treacherous undertow!” he shouts, echoing Ethan’s tantrum towards Simone. It seems these men feel compelled to portray women as mythically wicked in order to absolve themselves, doesn’t it?
In this gripping scene, I find myself alone with Bruce and Simone after years apart. He seizes the moment to confess his past actions towards her, which she vehemently rejects. His next words ignite a spark of fear within her – “Devon’s leaving, and it’ll just be you and me again.” This remark snaps Simone out of her post-dismissal daze, as memories of her turbulent past with her abusive father resurface. Determined to escape Buffalo’s grasp once more, she flees back to the Cliff House, the sanctuary from her tormented past.
In the meantime, Peter discovers that Simone has been let go from her job, and he’s quite angry about it. Officially, Michaela claims that Simone took her earrings, but this story seems questionable at best. When Peter questions why she would dismiss someone so close to her, Michaela appears genuinely upset. “The truth is I have feelings for her,” she laments, “but I can’t be with her, can I?” She seems sincere, and it’s clear that she won’t be addressing the rumors about her sexuality any time soon.
Peter hurries off to Simone’s vacant office, where a sudden fit of anxiety strikes him. As he regains composure, eerie melodies (think sirens) drift in. He peers out the window and spots Simone standing atop the beach stairs, gazing intently at him before moving downwards. Following her descent, he presses her to reconsider her dismissal, but she merely shakes her head. “I don’t wish to work here anymore, actually,” she admits. “However, before I depart, there’s something I need to share with you.
In a state of great urgency, something makes him immediately phone Jose, causing Jose to make a U-turn even with Bruce and Devon in the car. The situation is so dire that Ray has left, which, while sad for me personally, might be for the best. Upon arrival, Jose rushes to Michaela’s safe, where he discovers an incriminating photo, revealing it’s not as secure as previously thought, either from her husband or his trusted aide. Jose questions if his boss is certain about repeating this risky action. Peter, however, seems confident. This situation doesn’t bode well for Kiki.
In the lower part of the building, Devon storms directly into the grand event to challenge Michaela over her decision to let go of Simone: “You’re so blind, you absolute fool,” he says harshly. However, there’s a twist! “You’re power-hungry, manipulative, immoral, and accused of murder,” Devon shouts, causing the gathering to halt abruptly. But as the series Sirens has shown throughout its five episodes, none of these accusations are entirely accurate. As for the last allegation? Michaela calmly clarifies that Jocelyn underwent botched cosmetic surgery which has caused her unbearable pain in private for the past ten years. “Oh,” is all Devon can muster in response. Indeed, it’s a far cry from the intrigue of stepmommy murder.
Here I am, breaking free from the crowd, when Peter shares with Michaela his feelings about their marriage no longer being satisfactory. ‘For over a decade,’ he tells her, ‘you’ve systematically kept me disconnected from our children.’ Hearing this again makes her angry. ‘Is this really happening again?’ she exclaims. ‘It’s you who pushed your children away! It was you who left Jocelyn, and allowed them to vilify me.’ Frankly, Michaela, it’s about time you acknowledge that.
Peter finds it problematic that she’s holding onto the paparazzi photo since “strong marriages don’t require a safety net.” However, Michaela retorts that not only was he and his legal team meticulous in ensuring she wouldn’t pose a financial threat to him, but also that she held little significance to him “except for my potential offspring.” Peter, a self-made billionaire who prefers avoiding introspection, remains firm. He tells her, “I’m releasing you,” essentially dismissing her from the partnership they share as spouses.
If it doesn’t benefit you, let it go.
Due to her father’s poor health, Devon finds herself unable to join Captain Morgan on a sailing trip. Instead, she has made up her mind to remain in Buffalo, although under conditions that suit her better than Bruce’s. She confesses to Simone, tearfully, that returning to Buffalo to care for her sister was the most beneficial decision she ever made. Essentially, she explains, “I didn’t let you go, and you didn’t serve me, but now I must.” Despite their deep affection for each other, Devon acknowledges that they will never share the same perspective on life.
Simone expresses a theatrical tone, yet it’s not as if our meeting is a distant event. However, tears now stream down her face too. Despite their plans being unrealistic, they are set. They declare their affection and bid farewell. It’s heartbreakingly tragic. At least, they’re resolute in the decisions they’re consciously making.
After Devon and Bruce board the ferry, none other than Michaela steps onboard following them. Devon extends an olive branch or some comfort to her. “Do you think my sister will be alright with him?” she queries, casting a glance toward the cliffs. “No,” Michaela responds swiftly, which might not be a lie. Given their shared background of lack of privilege and power, they both understand why Simone made that decision. They can’t condemn her for it. All they can do is pray she manages to stay afloat amidst the tempting siren’s call as long as possible before the undertow pulls her away forever.
Bread Crumbs
• Quick round of applause for Moore, Alcock, and Meghann Fahy, who really did crush it throughout.
• A completely different spectacle unfolds when observing this sequence of events from the employees’ perspective. Indeed, there are some individuals who truly know how to enjoy themselves.
It’s quite unusual for Devon not to want to deposit a $10,000 check, given the situation, isn’t it? Why not cash it right away, Devon?
I no longer require another season of the series, but I’d gladly shell out some cash to witness Ethan’s response upon learning that his best friend is getting married to the woman who pushed him off a cliff.
I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something seems off.”
“Oh, you’re just being a tad dramatic today, I see.”
“Long live our bond of honesty and good-natured teasing!
