‘Sinners’ to Take Another Big Bite Out of Box Office, Ben Affleck’s ‘Accountant 2’ Aims for $25 Million Debut

“Sinners” looks to rule the box office again as three new movies open in North America.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that the R-rated vampire thriller masterpiece by director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan, titled “Sinners,” is poised for another blockbuster weekend, potentially earning between $25 million and $30 million in its second week. The film had a staggering opening last weekend with a whopping $48 million, making it the biggest debut for an original movie since 2019. To date, “Sinners” has amassed a total of $55 million domestically and $71 million internationally, all while working on a production budget of $90 million. I can’t wait to see how this horror film unfolds!

For upcoming premieres, Ben Affleck’s “The Accountant 2” is looking to rake in between $20 million and $25 million from a total of 3,610 cinemas. Amazon MGM is financing the follow-up to the 2016 release of “The Accountant,” which debuted with $24.7 million and turned out to be an unexpected success, ultimately grossing approximately $155 million worldwide. The production budget for this second movie is estimated at around $80 million (approximately twice the initial film’s cost of $45 million, not including global marketing costs).

As a movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the box office battle between “The Accountant 2” and the re-release of “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith for its 20th anniversary. Preliminary ticket sales predict that this space opera sequel will bring in a substantial $20 million to $22 million over the weekend, making it a formidable contender for the second spot on the box office charts.

A fresh addition to the scene, Sony’s R-rated horror movie titled “Until Dawn,” aims to gross between $8 million and $10 million from approximately 3,000 theaters. This production, which carries a production cost of $15 million, is inspired by the video game of the same name and revolves around a group of friends who find themselves stuck in a time loop reminiscent of “Groundhog Day,” repeatedly reliving the same evening as they are hunted and slain by an unmasked killer, only to awaken and discover they’ve returned to the start of that fateful night.

2025’s box office began rather slowly, but it’s gradually picking up pace. Compared to the same time last year, earnings have increased by 5%, although they are still lagging behind the pre-COVID levels of 2019 by 29%. According to Comscore, Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” (May 2), Tom Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, and Disney’s remake of “Lilo & Stitch” (May 23) are expected to maintain the momentum and attract crowds to the cinemas.
