Sinners Consultant Dolly Li Explains Inclusion of Chinese Delta Community

Ryan Coogler’s family played a significant and multifaceted role in shaping his film Sinners. In an interview with Variety, Coogler revealed that he immersed himself in blues music during the promotional tour for Wakanda Forever, as he was grieving his Uncle James, a blues enthusiast from Mississippi. This music, specifically the song “Wang Dang Doodle,” served as the foundation for the film’s plot. Yet, this wasn’t the only way that Coogler’s family ties affected Sinners. Filmmaker and cultural consultant on the production, Dolly Li, explained how Coogler found out that his father-in-law had ancestors from China’s Delta region, similar to the characters of Grace and Bo (portrayed by Li Jun Li and Yao). These characters were modeled after Chinese grocery store owners common during that time period. As a result, Sinners, set in Clarksdale, Mississippi during the Jim Crow era, also reflects the prominence of Chinese grocery stores in the Delta at that time.

In a less formal manner, Li’s teachings demonstrated, for instance, that Grace and Bo owned two grocery stores directly opposite each other. Li suggested on X that it was true comradeship for Ryan to ensure diversity in his work, as he could have easily made the store owners any race without any backlash. However, by doing so – sparking this discussion and adding depth to history – he indeed showed camaraderie.
