Currently, the R-rated film “Sinners” is breaking box office records, however, it’s disappointing that this unique blend of Western and Horror genres may soon be removed from IMAX theaters due to an inconvenient issue.
In virtually every aspect, Sinners emerged victorious. The partnership between Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan garnered widespread praise, culminating in a nearly perfect 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, underscoring the film’s unique blend of genres.
The movie notched up an impressive opening weekend earnings of $48 million, which was then surpassed by an astounding second weekend take of $45.7 million.
This second-week drop is the least significant among films opening above $40 million since Avatar, and it’s also the smallest decrease for an R-rated or horror movie with these earnings. However, due to another high-grossing film, the IMAX screenings of this movie are likely coming to a close soon.
Why is Sinners leaving IMAX?
Sinners is being kicked out of IMAX screens to make room for new Marvel movie Thunderbolts*.
In typical Hollywood fashion, major films are given a designated period to screen at IMAX theaters, after which they make way for another big-budget movie.
Due to the unexpected box office hit of Oppenheimer during the summer of 2023, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 had to share some IMAX theaters with Christopher Nolan’s biopic, as well as benefit from the “Barbenheimer” effect. (The term “Barbenheimer” is used here to refer to the significant influence of Robert Downey Jr.’s popularity on movie success.)
In contrast to other movies, which tend to lose interest among audiences within a week or two due to the arrival of the next big release, the case is quite opposite for “Sinners”. Due to favorable reviews and positive word-of-mouth, it has managed to maintain its popularity.
The film is not only drawing repeat viewers, but also attracting new ones who are just discovering it. Interestingly, women seem to be a significant part of this audience – they made up 46% during the opening weekend, and that figure increased to 50% in week two, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Although sinners will continue showing on regular screens for some time, the worldwide earnings of the film, currently at $163.2 million, are expected to go up further.
