‘Sing Sing’ Breakout Clarence Maclin to Lead Ray Panthaki’s Feature Directorial Debut ‘In Starland’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Ray Panthaki, a well-recognized British actor and movie director, famed for roles in films like “Boiling Point” and “Colette,” and TV series such as “The Serpent Queen,” is all set to step into the director’s chair for the first time with his upcoming feature film titled “In Starland.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my excitement for a film that I was fortunate enough to be part of its creation. This compelling narrative, penned by Panthaki and collaboratively crafted with Jason Kavan, delves deeply into the complexities of generational gaps and the profound connections between us humans. It promises to be an emotionally raw and intellectually stimulating journey, one that leaves a lasting impression on anyone who experiences it.

Clarence Maclin, who gained significant recognition for his exceptional performance in “Sing Sing,” will spearhead the project ahead. This breakthrough role has landed him nominations for best supporting actor at the BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Independent Spirit Awards. He also won at the Gotham Awards, and was nominated for an Oscar for best adapted screenplay alongside Greg Kwedar, Clint Bentley, and John ‘Divine G’ Whitfield. Notably, “In Starland” will be Maclin’s debut as a leading actor.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be working on an exciting new project, collaborating with the talented Daniel Khalili (“Trespass Against Us”). We’re bringing this project to life through our freshly established production company, Le Bateau Lavoir, a successor to my Urban Way banner that has previously produced successful films like “Boiling Point” and “Convenience”. Adding to the stellar team, Emmy-winning producer Daisy Allsop will also contribute her talents through her Archface banner. I can hardly wait to see this project unfold!

Titled “In Starland,” this drama can be seen as a tale of middle-aged evolution. It centers around an individual grappling with the hurdles imposed by small-town existence. However, his life takes an unexpected twist when he encounters a daring band of young artists who flout tradition and draw him into their unconventional realm. The filmmakers describe it as a deeply personal and thoughtful examination of a character, delving into the immense emotional and cultural divide between two generations, not due to time lapse, but owing to the swift advancement of technology.

Panthaki stated that this movie has been part of his life for quite some time now, evolving even before he started penning it. It holds personal significance and stems from a profoundly spiritual source. However, what makes it more than just that is its role in helping him comprehend the world – in communicating the sights, emotions, and uncertainties he experiences through a medium like film, which uniquely enables such expression.

Maclin remarked: “I’m overjoyed to join ‘In Starland.’ The script resonated with me due to its thoughtful examination of self-exploration and the human experience in a fresh, contemporary manner. Ray Panthaki’s approach to this movie is daring and insightful, and I can’t wait to help bring this tale to the big screen under his leadership.

Panthaki is a versatile individual, known for acting, scriptwriting, and producing. He has recently been voted into the BAFTA Film Committee. His first full-length film, “In Starland,” expands upon the success of his highly praised, award-winning short films “Life Sentence” and “Ernie.

Production on “In Starland” is set to commence in the U.S. in April.

Panthaki is affiliated with the agencies CAA (Creative Artists Agency), Color Creative, and CAM (Courtney Arlington Management). On the other hand, Maclin is managed by Gersh and MGMT Entertainment.
