Simón Mesa Soto’s ‘A Poet’ Boarded by Luxbox Ahead of Cannes Premiere (EXCLUSIVE)

The film “A Poet,” directed by Simón Mesa Soto, has been picked up for representation by Sales agency Luxbox. This movie will make its debut at the global stage in the Un Certain Regard section of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

The story, set in Medellin, Colombia, focuses on Oscar Restrepo, whose love for poetry has yielded him no recognition. Growing older and unpredictable, he’s become a stereotype of the reclusive poet. However, his life brightens when he encounters Yurlady, a young girl from a modest background, whom he helps nurture her gift. Yet introducing her to the world of poets might not be advisable.

The movie, filmed in Medellin, Colombia, revolves around Oscar Restrepo, whose passion for poetry has earned him no accolades. As he ages and grows more erratic, he embodies the typical solitary poet. His life takes a turn when he meets Yurlady, a girl from humble beginnings, whom he assists in developing her talent. But involving her in the world of poets could be problematic.

In his second film, titled “A Poet”, Soto follows up on his debut work “Amparo”. This movie was screened at Cannes Critics’ Week in 2021 and earned Sandra Melissa Torres the Louis Roedered Foundation Rising Star Award.

In addition to both of his short movies, titled “Mother” (2016) and “Leidi” (2014), being screened at Cannes, it’s worth noting that “Leidi” was awarded the prestigious Short Film Palme d’Or.

The team behind “A Poet” consists of Juan Sarmiento G. from Medio de Contención Producciones in Colombia, Manuel Ruiz Montealegre also from Medio de Contención Producciones in Colombia, and Simón Mesa Soto representing Ocúltimo, also based in Colombia.

The producers responsible for this project are Katharina Bergfeld (from Majade Fiction in Germany), David Herdies (from Momento Film in Sweden), Michael Krotkiewski (also from Momento Film and Film i Väst in Sweden), and Heino Deckert (from Ma.ja.de Fiction, ZDF Das kleine Fernsehspiel, and ARTE in Germany).

The cast is led by Ubeimar Rios, Rebeca Andrade and Guillermo Cardona.

Fiorella Moretti, Luxbox’s CEO, and Jennyfer Gautier, head of international sales, jointly expressed their immediate admiration for the director’s unique perspective and the film’s striking beauty. They described ‘A Poet’ as daring, personal, and subtly rebellious. The movie skillfully tackles modern and profoundly human issues with a hint of playfulness and unanticipated wit. What particularly attracted them was how it delves into the yearning to create, and how its main character discovers moments of optimism in a frequently unforgiving environment.

According to G. Sarmiento: “Simon’s perspective is one-of-a-kind, witty, and fearless; he explores numerous topics without hesitation, using humor and tragedy interchangeably. We eagerly anticipate premiering Simon’s new piece in the official selection at Cannes once more.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to express my admiration for Luxbox’s extraordinary film collection. They meticulously select only a handful of films annually, ensuring their full dedication to each masterpiece. I firmly believe that with Fiorella and her team on board, our movie will reach a broader spectrum of cinema enthusiasts.
