Silent Hill 2 Art Director Masahiro Ito Almost Said No To Returning For Remake

As a devoted fan of the eerie and enigmatic world of Silent Hill, I was utterly astounded to learn that Masahiro Ito, the mastermind behind the game’s chilling artistry and iconic monsters like Pyramid Head, almost declined the opportunity to contribute to the upcoming remake. It’s as if Ito, in his infinite wisdom, had somehow sensed that a reimagining of such a classic was unnecessary… or perhaps he was just too busy terrorizing our dreams with his twisted creations!

Masahiro Ito, the art director of Silent Hill 2, shared that he nearly declined the opportunity to contribute to Konami’s upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2. Given Ito’s significant contribution to the original game, particularly the creation of the renowned Pyramid Head monster, this revelation was unexpected. During a recent preview event for Silent Hill 2, Ito expressed that at first, he felt there was no necessity for a remake.

In late 2019 or early 2020, Akira Yamaoka, who composed for Silent Hill 2, contacted me through Twitter (which was the platform’s name then). He inquired if I would be interested in collaborating on a remake of Silent Hill 2. At first, I thought it unnecessary and considered declining the offer.

Ito’s decision to come back was based on the art director’s statement that Konami could proceed with the project without his involvement in the offer. Recognizing it as an opportunity to maintain the essence of the original game, Ito chose to “collaborate,” considering it the most suitable course of action.

As a devoted admirer, I believed it would be more beneficial to collaborate than to step away from the project. My aim was to ensure that the heart and soul of Silent Hill 2, what truly defines it as Silent Hill 2, remained intact and was presented in the most authentic manner possible.

One approach Ito took was by avoiding the inclusion of entirely new monsters in the Silent Hill 2 remake. Instead, his focus was on refining and enhancing the creatures that didn’t meet his vision from 25 years ago, either due to limitations of time or technology.

Besides chatting with Ito about the remake, TopMob got to play approximately three hours of the Silent Hill 2 remake at its Tokyo preview event. Despite finding the trailers for the upcoming psychological horror game a bit lackluster, we left the session incredibly impressed by the game’s initial stages. We also managed to speak with Akira Yamaoka, the musician behind both the original Silent Hill 2 and its upcoming remake, who shared insights about the new soundtrack. The Silent Hill 2 remake, called simply Silent Hill 2, is set to launch on October 8 for PC and PlayStation 5.
