Sigourney Weaver Thanks Venice for ‘Jet Fuel of Encouragement’ as She Accepts Golden Lion, Jokes Husband Will Have to ‘Get Used to Having It in Bed’

As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in celluloid dreams, I can confidently say that Sigourney Weaver is nothing short of cinematic royalty. Her 45-year career, spanning iconic roles from “Alien” to “Avatar,” has left an indelible mark on the silver screen.

Sigourney Weaver took center stage on the opening night of the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

Before the first screening of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the renowned actress, known for movies like “Alien,” “Avatar” and “Gorillas in the Mist,” received the Golden Lion for a Lifetime Achievement, acknowledging her four-decade career.

She exclaimed, “I must be dreaming,” upon receiving the award. “Thank you for this incredible boost of motivation.” Later, she expressed that her Golden Lion was “the most extraordinary honor I could ever conceive,” and mentioned that the statue would be “joining me on the flight, it will soon be in the gondola; my husband will need to grow accustomed to its presence next to us in bed.”

Prior to receiving the award, there was an unexpected video message from James Cameron, who pointed out that Weaver was long overdue for winning an Oscar.

During today’s festival press conference, I couldn’t help but feel a swell of emotion when a journalist hinted at how my iconic portrayal of Ripley could have paved the way for on-screen female empowerment. Remarkably, this empowerment might have played a role in propelling Kamala Harris towards becoming the U.S. president. What an incredible thought!

Weaver expressed great enthusiasm about Kamala, even seeming to become emotional as she considered the possibility of her impact. “Just imagining that my efforts might play a part in her rise brings me genuine joy,” she remarked. “In fact, it’s true. Many women have come to thank me for it.”

Of Harris, she added, “It’s been difficult since 2016, and we’re all very grateful about her.”
