Sigourney Weaver has shared some new thoughts about why Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5 never happened.
Sigourney Weaver became famous for playing Ellen Ripley in the 1979 film Alien, directed by Ridley Scott. She later returned to the role in three more movies: Aliens (directed by James Cameron), Alien 3 (directed by David Fincher), and Alien Resurrection (released in 1997).
Around the mid-2010s, director Neill Blomkamp intended to make a fifth Alien film featuring Sigourney Weaver. However, those plans were cancelled when Ridley Scott returned to the series, directing Prometheus in 2012 and Alien: Covenant in 2017. Alien: Covenant didn’t perform well at the box office, which led to a pause in any further Alien movies.
What did Sigourney Weaver say about Alien 5?
Sigourney Weaver recently explained why the fifth Alien film, directed by Neill Blomkamp, was ultimately never made, during a screening of Alien at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris.
According to AVPGalaxy, she confirmed she was a big fan of director Neill Blomkamp and his work, especially his film. They had previously collaborated on ‘Chappie,’ and he’d approached her about a potential continuation of the ‘Alien’ story, bringing back characters Ripley and Newt. She described the script as excellent, but unfortunately, Ridley Scott, the original director of ‘Alien,’ became protective of the franchise and focused on developing his own prequel films. She believes this ultimately killed the project, and Blomkamp eventually lost interest, which she found disappointing given his talent. She wishes him the best in his future endeavors.
Although Neill Blomkamp’s planned Alien 5 seems unlikely to ever be made, another Alien film, Alien: Romulus, came out last year. Now, a follow-up to Romulus is being developed.
Neill Blomkamp’s latest film was 2023’s Gran Turismo. He’s currently working on a new movie based on Robert A. Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, which he’s writing and directing, following an announcement last spring.
