Making the Avatar movies is a huge undertaking, so it’s not surprising they take James Cameron and his team a long time to film. The second and third films were shot back-to-back over several years, and a lot happened during that time. Actress Sigourney Weaver shared with TopMob that she watched the young cast members grow up during production. The actors themselves often talked about how they came of age while working on the films, and Weaver even joked about it.
Sigourney Weaver Recalls Working With The Younger Actors Of The Avatar Franchise
Sigourney Weaver had a unique experience working on the Avatar sequels, playing Kiri, the adopted daughter of Jake and Neytiri. This meant she spent a lot of time filming with the young actors portraying the Sully children, including Jack Champion, Trinity Bliss, and Britain Dalton. In an interview with CB about the new film, Fire and Ash, Weaver spoke highly of her co-stars, noting how much they’ve grown as performers. She also shared a heartwarming story about auditioning with Jack Champion.
I first met Jack when he was 12, during an audition. I was playfully moving around as my character, Kiri, and suggested we try something spontaneous. We ended up running and improvising together all over the stairs for about 20 minutes. He was enthusiastic and a natural, and I immediately knew he’d be perfect as Spider. I feel very fortunate to have worked with him. It’s amazing to see him grow and succeed, alongside Trinity and Britain.
When I was younger, I honestly didn’t get why adults were so fascinated by watching kids grow up. Now that I’m an adult, though, it totally makes sense, and Sigourney Weaver’s feelings really hit home for me. She spent so much time with the young cast of The Way of Water and Fire and Ash – they filmed both movies together from 2017 to 2020 – and it’s amazing to think about how much those kids changed during filming. Being on a set that huge must have been wild for them, and they definitely had some one-of-a-kind experiences, as you’d expect!
Avatar’s Younger Actors Tell Us About Growing Up On Set
TopMob recently spoke with the young stars of Avatar: The Way of Water, and they still rave about being part of such a huge film series. Champion (now 21), Bliss (now 16), and Bailey Bass (22, who plays Reya) all have happy memories of their time on set growing up. Both Bass and Bliss discussed the difficulties of switching from regular school to being filmed, but Bliss had a particularly positive outlook on the experience.
Being raised on the set of Avatar was an incredible experience – truly the best gift I could’ve asked for. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without the inspiring people I met there. Growing up alongside my character has been a huge part of my life, and lately, we’ve all been feeling a bit nostalgic and sentimental about our childhoods.
As a critic, I can only imagine the incredible experiences those young actors had on set. Getting to share scenes – and even swim! – with legends like Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldaña, and Sam Worthington? That’s a childhood most kids only dream of. And being directed by James Cameron, a true visionary, undoubtedly shaped them in unforgettable ways. They didn’t just star in a movie; they lived a truly unique one.
