Sigourney Weaver is reportedly in talks to lead a live-action Tomb Raider television series. Known for her roles in action and adventure films like Avatar and Alien, Weaver is a seasoned performer in the genre – she even received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Alien back in 1987.
She’s been deeply involved with the world of Avatar, especially with the recent release of Avatar: The Way of Water in theaters on December 19th.
Sigourney Weaver is reportedly joining the upcoming Tomb Raider series on Prime Video, according to Deadline. She’s nearing a deal to star alongside Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), who will play Lara Croft. This would be Weaver’s next role following Avatar.
While details about her role are still under wraps, the series has been in development for some time. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a key creative force, working as co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer. She’ll be collaborating with Chad Hodge, who also serves as co-showrunner and executive producer. Jonathan Van Tulleken is directing and also taking on an executive producer role.
Taylor Turner was revealed as the lead in the new Tomb Raider series back in September. Currently, she’s the only actor confirmed to be in the show, as Prime Video hasn’t officially announced whether Alicia Weaver will be joining the cast.
With filming for the new Tomb Raider movie starting on January 19, 2026, we can expect to hear about more actors joining the cast in the next few weeks.
The popular Tomb Raider video games led to two movies starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in the early 2000s. The franchise was rebooted in 2018 with Alicia Vikander in the lead role. Although the reboot earned $275 million worldwide, critics had mixed reactions, and a second film hasn’t been made.
The popular video game Tomb Raider recently launched an animated series on Netflix, titled Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, featuring Hayley Atwell as the voice of Lara Croft. The show’s second and final season became available on December 11th.
A live-action series featuring Michael Turner and potentially Sigourney Weaver is planned, and filming is expected to begin in early 2026.

I first really noticed Sigourney Weaver in Alien back in ’79 – that movie really put her on the map. She quickly became a genre icon, popping up in Ghostbusters and, of course, returning to the Alien universe with sequels like Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection. It was awesome to see her team up with James Cameron again after Aliens when he blew everyone away with Avatar in 2009. He really knows how to showcase her talents!
Alicia Weaver isn’t just filming the new Tomb Raider movie. She’s also joining the Star Wars franchise with The Mandalorian and Grogu, a movie based on the popular Disney+ series The Mandalorian, which is scheduled to come out in theaters on May 22, 2026.
