2022 saw the initial unveiling of a film adaptation of the video game Sifu, and since then, it has been picking up momentum. Today, it was confirmed that Netflix has acquired this movie, which is based on the Slocap game and will be produced under the 87Eleven banner led by John Wick veteran Chad Stahelski.
In a new development, it’s been announced that T.S. Nowlin (known for The Maze Runner) is penning the script for an upcoming movie titled Sifu. Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg from Story Kitchen, previously known as dj2, are producing this project. Additionally, production teams from 87Eleven, led by Stahelski, Jason Spitz, and Alex Young, are also involved. The news of the Sifu movie coming to Netflix was first broken by Deadline. Notably, Story Kitchen is also responsible for the popular Sonic the Hedgehog series, as well as upcoming adaptations of It Takes Two, Just Cause, Vampire Survivors, and Disco Elysium in movies and TV shows.
Kitchen’s Johnson and Goldberg stated that the movie, Sifu, appears to have all the essential elements needed for an extraordinary cinematic journey. They highlighted aspects such as intense action sequences, high emotional involvement, and a fresh perspective on martial arts as key attractions for a live-action adaptation.
Previously, Sifu has been adapted across multiple media formats, with its depiction appearing on Amazon Prime Video’s Secret Level anthology series. On the other hand, developers at Slocap unveiled a fresh project titled Rematch during The Game Awards in December 2024. This upcoming title is set to launch later in the year, and it promises an exciting gaming experience.
The Sifu film is still in its initial stages, and no information has been revealed about whether it will be animated or live-action, who might direct or act in it. It’s among several video game adaptations in production, with A Minecraft Movie and Until Dawn being the next ones to hit theaters on April 4 and April 25 respectively.
