Shudder Buys Aislinn Clarke’s Irish Folk Horror ‘Fréwaka’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a long-time follower of Shudder and a lover of horror films that push boundaries and challenge expectations, I am beyond excited to hear about “Fréwaka,” the first Irish-language horror film! Having grown up with a deep connection to my own Irish heritage and folklore, I can’t wait to see how Aislinn Clarke weaves together traditional superstitions and modern storytelling in this atmospheric tale.

As a devoted horror enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that AMC’s genre streaming platform, Shudder, has acquired the distribution rights for “Fréwaka” in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. This chilling production is touted as the first Irish-language horror film, promising a unique and terrifying experience for fans like me!

The movie titled “Fréwaka,” written and directed by Aislinn Clarke, stars Clare Monnelly, Bríd Ní Neachtain, and Aleksandra Bystrzhitskaya. This bilingual film (Irish and English) had its world premiere at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival and will make its U.K. debut at the BFI London Film Festival on October 11, 2024. “Fréwaka” is set to be released on Shudder in 2025.

In a distant hamlet, home caretaker Shoo accompanies Frewaka, a woman with agoraphobia who dreads both her neighbors and the ominous Na Sídhe – beings she thinks kidnapped her long ago. As an unusual bond forms between them, Shoo becomes ensnared by the elderly woman’s suspicions, customs, and superstitions, eventually facing the demons from his own history.

Clarke has been a fan of Shudder since its beginning and watched it evolve into a globally recognized platform for innovative, bold, and exhilarating horror films. He’s excited to collaborate with Shudder in sharing the film ‘Fréwaka’ with audiences worldwide.

Emily Gotto, Shudder’s senior vice president of acquisitions and production, expressed her excitement: “Following her impressive debut ‘The Devil’s Doorway,’ we are delighted to work with Aislinn Clarke on ‘Fréwaka.’ This chilling, confined film is rich in Irish folklore, marking the first horror movie in the Irish language to appear at prestigious international film festivals worldwide.

The movie titled ‘Fréwaka’ is created by Diarmuid Lavery for DoubleBand Films and Patrick O’Neill for Wildcard. This production also has executive producers, Máire Ní Chonláin, Deirbhile Ní Churraighín, Greg Martin, and Michael Hewitt. The financing for this film comes from the Cine4 scheme, which is supported by Screen Ireland, TG4, Coimisiún na Meán, and Section 481. In the year 2025, Wildcard will distribute ‘Fréwaka’ in Irish cinemas.

The agreement was worked out between Jan Naszewski at New Europe Film and Marissa Frobes at CAA, acting as representatives for the filmmakers, and Gotto representing Shudder, respectively.
