It’s unfortunate to announce that Spectre Divide, our exclusive tactical shooter developed by Shroud, has been officially closed down just half a year after its release. The struggle with maintaining player numbers is also causing the dissolution of the game’s development team.
On September 3, 2024, Spectre Divide was launched. Exactly six months later, the team at Mountaintop Studios has revealed that they will be shutting down the game.
In this game, known as a tactical shooter, supported by the well-known FPS veteran and streaming sensation shroud, introduced an innovative twist: allowing players to simultaneously command two characters. Initially, this unique idea attracted many (tens of thousands), who were curious about it. Unfortunately, over time, it faced difficulties, with the number of players decreasing and failing to recover from the dip.
Despite the introduction of the game’s significant first seasonal overhaul, it hasn’t managed to entice players to return. Consequently, developers have chosen to halt further development, leading to the closure of the studio responsible for the game.

Shroud’s FPS Spectre Divide is going offline
On March 12, 2025, it was announced that Spectre Divide will be shutting down, as the initial Season 1 launch did not manage to reach the necessary level of success to continue supporting the game and ensuring the survival of Mountaintop, according to co-founder and CEO Nate Mitchell.
At first, the team felt hopeful after the latest update, which attracted approximately 400,000 players in total, “with a peak simultaneous player count of 10,000 across all platforms.” However, the numbers didn’t hold up and they failed to maintain this level of engagement.
Spectre and the studio’s daily operating expenses have exceeded the current level of active players and income we’ve been receiving.
Unfortunately, we no longer have the financial resources to keep our game running. As a result, Mountaintop will shut down by the end of this week.
It appears the studio was attempting to secure funding from external sources, a potential publishing partner, or even a complete takeover, yet nothing materialized in the end. “Things are challenging for the industry at the moment,” Mitchell emphasized.
Spectre Divide is set to go offline within the following month, and any money spent by gamers since the beginning of Season 1 will be returned to them.
From the get-go, we were aware that the situation wasn’t favorable, yet that’s exactly why we chose to embark on this journey. Nothing about this endeavor came with guarantees. Despite these odds, we pressed forward and carried on with our plans.
A message from our CEO about the future of Spectre Divide and Mountaintop Studios.

In the age of continuous service games, many titles have faced a common end. A notable instance is PlayStation’s Concord, which was completely removed from existence just weeks after its release. Ubisoft’s XDefiant also falls under this category, as it has experienced difficulty competing and ultimately bit the dust in a similar manner.
Currently, Spectre Divide is added to the expanding roster. As of now, Shroud has remained silent regarding this issue, but we’ll update you promptly if anything new emerges.
Due to the difficulties the game has faced since its debut, the Twitch streamer has mostly steered clear of the project. The game’s layoffs, troubles with microtransactions, and fundamental gameplay flaws have been major concerns, causing even popular gamers like Shroud to become frustrated enough to quit playing the game on occasion.
