The new Netflix documentary, ‘Should I Marry A Murderer?’, explores a shocking secret and its devastating impact on many people, but it leaves out a crucial piece of the puzzle.
The true crime documentary Should I Marry a Murderer? follows pathologist Caroline Muirhead as she works to have her fiancé, Sandy McKellar, convicted of a crime.
Shortly after getting engaged, Sandy confessed to Caroline that he and his twin brother, Robert, had been involved in a hit-and-run accident years earlier, where they struck and killed cyclist Tony Parsons while driving under the influence. They then concealed the crime by burying his body.
Caroline shared the information with the police, leading to a lengthy investigation and the eventual arrest of the brothers. The case then went to trial. However, despite being legally required to testify, Muirhead never appeared in court – the reason for his absence isn’t explained in the Netflix series.
Caroline Muirhead refused to testify against Sandy McKellar due to BBC doc

In the last episode of Should I Marry a Murderer?, David Green, a former head of homicide investigations, explained that Caroline Muirhead was crucial to the case. He believed getting her testimony in court was essential to achieving a conviction against the McKellars.
Muirhead was struggling with substance abuse, secretly gathering evidence by recording Sandy McKellar, and was concerned about her own ability to reliably testify in court.
Caroline received a warning that she could be held in contempt of court if she didn’t show up, but she panicked and instead spent the day looking for the victim’s stolen bicycle instead of going to court.
However, the book Should I Marry a Murderer? doesn’t mention that Muirhead was also frightened by a BBC film crew who were making a documentary about the case.

In a 2023 interview with The Daily Record, Muirhead explained that when she learned a film crew would be allowed in court, she immediately told the police she didn’t want to be filmed. Police then warned her there would be repercussions if she refused to appear on camera.
I was a mess, completely falling apart,” Muirhead said. “I felt lost and didn’t know what I was doing. The documentary filmmakers promised to disguise my identity, but it didn’t make a difference.
She fled, and the police found and arrested her later that day. However, when the McKellar brothers admitted their guilt, Caroline wasn’t charged with any crime and was released.
She’s now living by the sea with a new partner. Meanwhile, Sandy McKellar is in prison for 12 years after being found guilty of manslaughter and trying to obstruct justice. Robert is also in prison for five years and three months for attempting to obstruct justice.
