‘Shogun’s’ Hiroyuki Sanada Can’t Wait for Cast Reunion at the Emmys: ‘It’s Been Two Years’

As a long-time admirer of the magic that television can create, I must say that this year’s Emmys have been nothing short of inspiring. The diversity and representation that we are seeing is not just a reflection of the world around us, but a testament to the power of storytelling when it comes from authentic voices.

The name on everybody’s lips at this week’s Emmys is FX’s “Shōgun.”

Hiroyuki Sanada, an Emmy-nominated actor and producer, was eager to catch up with his fellow cast members at the event on Sunday. “It’s been about two years since I last saw them,” he shared with EbMaster. “I’m really excited for our get-together.

Sanada, along with co-star Anna Sawai, and the showrunners Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, were some of the nominated guests who attended Gold House’s first annual toast for the Emmy Awards.

Gold House teamed up with Blackhouse, CAPE, GLAAD, IllumiNative, Latinx House, MPAC, NAACP, NALIP, NHMC, PEAK, Pillars, RespectAbility, Macro, Nissan, and the Television Academy to recognize the 2024 multicultural nominees and their accomplishments in filmmaking at a celebration held on Thursday evening at the Maybourne Hotel in Beverly Hills.

2022 saw a richly varied selection of Emmy nominations, with 30 actors of color being recognized across all acting categories. For the first time in Emmy history, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”) and Kali Reis (“True Detective: Night Country”) were nominated as Indigenous actresses. FX’s series “Reservation Dogs” finally received a well-deserved nomination for outstanding comedy series. D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, the lead actor on the show, made history as the first Indigenous actor to be nominated in TV Academy history. Additionally, most of this year’s AAPI acting nominations came from the series “Shōgun”.

Last weekend, “Shōgun” shattered a seasonal record by claiming an impressive 14 awards at the Creative Arts Emmys, leaving Kondo, who was present, stunned by the haul. In her surprise, she expressed, “I never thought we’d win in those categories.

Moeka Hoshi, the actress who portrays Usami Fuji in the series, shared that the One House Toast event marked her initial Hollywood party experience. Much like others, she was present to celebrate and appreciate the show’s fanbase. Additionally, Hoshi confessed to checking award prediction sites regularly. “I can’t help but check where ‘Shogun’ stands,” she chuckled.

The One House Toast is an extension of Gold House’s objective to redefine Asian Pacific and multicultural portrayal, both in front of and behind the scenes, within the entertainment industry. Over the past year, Gold House has delivered groundbreaking research, cultural guidance, investments, and promotional efforts for more than 100 films and television series, such as “Shogun,” “Pachinko,” and Sean Wang’s teenage drama “Didi.

In her opening remarks, Tiffany Chao, Vice President of Entertainment and Media at Gold House, said, “It’s incredible to be here with you all tonight at our inaugural One House Toast to the Emmys to celebrate this historic year of multicultural excellence in television. As someone who has been truly obsessed with TV since I was a kid, I’ve been reflecting on why TV holds such a special place in my heart. Only TV allows us to spend hours with characters we love and hate, episode after episode, season after season, and it’s in TV that we’re seeing progress — the stories we watch in our homes are starting to reflect the diversity of our real world on screen.”

The cast members of “Baby Reindeer” on Netflix – Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill – stopped by an event after a question-and-answer session. Goodman-Hill was astounded by the success of “Baby Reindeer” and still in awe over his Emmy nomination in the supporting actor category. “I can hardly believe I’ll be in that room,” he said, shaking his head. “It’s mind-blowing! I’m really excited and looking forward to seeing people I’ve known for years. There will be individuals I’ve admired my entire life, and I’ll be in the same room as them! I still can’t believe it.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but eagerly anticipate witnessing none other than Robert Downey Jr. on the big screen. It’s utterly astounding to think that our paths, however briefly, have intersected within the vast universe of cinema.
