The deal struck between Fire and Ice Media and Netflix for “Crosspoint” is a testament to the growing influence of Asian cinema on the global stage.
In a recent development, the Filipino media company, Fire and Ice Media, has transferred the rights for “Crosspoint” in the Asia Pacific region to Netflix. This agreement was finalized during the recently-held Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM), which took place alongside the Busan International Film Festival.
The movie showcases Carlo Aquino, a renowned Filipino actor (“Whispers in the Wind”), alongside Hira Takehiro of Japan, who was Emmy-nominated for his role in “Shogun.” The plot revolves around Manuel Hidalgo (Aquino), a once successful Filipino actor experiencing a career downturn, who migrates to Japan to earn a living by secretly performing in Filipino bars. He crosses paths with Shigeru (Hira), a 50-year-old construction manager on the brink of bankruptcy due to unpaid loans. In a shared desire to transform their lives, they encounter news about a fugitive serial killer – someone Manuel recognizes. Seizing an opportunity to resolve their predicaments, they pursue and capture the killer to claim the reward money.
Brillante Mendoza’s “Motherland,” a Filipino production by the auteur, made its debut at the Busan festival. This film narrates the tale of Dao-ayen, a Special Action Force member from the Ifugao tribe in northern Luzon, who was involved in the 2015 Mamasapano raid that tragically led to the loss of 44 lives. The movie is symbolic of fire and ice in representing the Philippines.
2021’s ACFM was a productive and enjoyable event for Fire and Ice Media. We found ourselves in a whirlwind of consecutive meetings, fielding numerous queries about our productions, and are now engaged in ongoing discussions for multiple regions, as shared by Liza Diño-Seguerra with EbMaster. A significant milestone was securing the Asia Pacific rights for ‘Crosspoint’ with Netflix. Furthermore, we’re actively negotiating ‘Motherland’ with various distributors and looking into festival invitations for its future screenings. The response has been robust, yet we’re cautiously holding off on certain territories due to potential OTT [streaming] deals.
Diño-Seguerra explained that our movie acquisition strategy was strengthened at ACFM, as we observed a recurring interest in horror movies among distributors. This trend clearly suggests the types of films we should focus on acquiring in the future. Given the rise of streaming platforms and the shift in content consumption patterns, we’re adjusting our strategies to meet this changing market. The conventional methods of film distribution and cinema releases are undergoing rapid transformation, with more people opting for on-demand content. This trend has led to a significant decrease in traditional movie-theater visits, even in Korea.
However, ACFM proved to be an excellent stage for marketing our movies and acquiring market knowledge. As debutants, we gleaned crucial insights that will steer our business decisions moving forward, as pointed out by Diño-Seguerra.
