Cosmo Jarvis, known for his role in FX’s popular series “Shōgun,” is set to portray the character of Joseph Stalin in an upcoming production titled “Young Stalin.” Géla Babluani, director of films such as “13 Tzameti” and “Money,” has been confirmed to direct this period thriller. The project is being financed by Access Entertainment, a company owned by Len Blavatnik, which previously supported Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-winning film “The Zone of Interest” and last year’s production titled “Conclave.
The movie “Young Stalin” is inspired by Simon Sebag Montefiore’s critically acclaimed book, and it delves into the early life of Joseph Stalin when he was a criminal involved in bank robberies before the Russian Revolution. Babluani and Montefiore are responsible for the screenplay, with AI Film and Monte Rosso Productions supporting its production.
“Young Stalin” is a film that shows what life was like for Joseph Stalin when he was a gangster who robbed banks before the Russian Revolution. It’s based on Simon Sebag Montefiore’s well-known book, and Babluani and Montefiore wrote the script. AI Film and Monte Rosso Productions are helping to make it.
Amidst the tumultuous era of Imperial Russia’s criminal underworld and political upheaval, this film delves into the origins of a ruthless dictator who would redefine the 20th century through terror, war, and ideology – all while orchestrating what is claimed to be the largest bank heist in Russian history.
Director Géla Babluani expressed: “I’ve always been attracted to tales that dwell in the dark corners, and nothing casts a longer shadow than Stalin’s. This isn’t a depiction of power — it’s an exploration of the inferno that shaped it. In Cosmo, we have a main actor who grasps danger, allure, and the cracks within identity.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to announce that my project, “Upgrade,” is ready for presentation to global distributors at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. The main shoot is all set to commence in the beautiful city of Tbilisi, Georgia, starting from July.
Sam Taylor from F&ME (“Before the Rain”) is collaborating as a producer alongside Archil Gelovani of IFP (“April”), Vladimer Katcharava of 20 Steps (“Girls of the Sun”), and Alexander Kushaev (“The Painted Bird”). Blavatnik serves as executive producer, along with Danny Cohen and Vince Holden. Rupert Lloyd, Gunda Bergman, and Esko Rips complete the team responsible for production.
In my account, Stalin’s formative years as a bank robber are an extraordinary, yet mostly unheard tale, fueled by a burning passion for revolution. This period was marked by acts of violence, deceit, and an insatiable appetite for power. Cohen further highlighted this intriguing narrative.
Upcoming tasks for Jarvis involve participating in director Guy Ritchie’s upcoming movie titled “Wife & Dog,” as well as appearing in A24’s intense war drama, “Warfare.” Currently, he is represented by both United Talent Agency (UTA) and The Artists Partnership.
