FX has officially announced that ‘Shogun’ will return for its second season, with production slated to start in January 2026 in Vancouver. This highly-acclaimed historical drama is making a comeback!
Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis, who played Lord Yoshii Toranaga and John Blackthorne in Season 1, are set to reprise their roles for the upcoming seasons. Interestingly, Sanada, who was not only a star but also a producer in Season 1, has been promoted to an executive producer role. Meanwhile, Jarvis will take on the responsibility of co-executive producer in the series.
The second season will take place 10 years after the events of the first.
Season 1 of ‘Shogun’ was adapted from the book with the same title penned by James Clavell, which was partially inspired by genuine historical occurrences in Japan. This series received almost unanimous praise when it premiered in February 2024.
In May, it emerged that FX was considering a second season due to the success of the first one. Sources suggested that if another season was indeed in the works, the show would be eligible for Emmy awards in the drama series category instead of limited series. Soon after, it was revealed that Sanada had agreed to come back for a second season, and FX then announced that the creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks were planning two more seasons with the James Clavell estate. More recently, the writers’ room for the second season has been closed by Kondo and Marks.
Kondo, Marks, Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, and Michael De Luca are all serving as executive producers for this production. As previously stated, Sanada is also an executive producer, while Jarvis takes on the role of co-executive producer. FX Productions is the studio handling this project.
According to FX, “Shōgun” was the network’s all-time highest rated program. In 2024, it broke records by winning an impressive 18 Emmy Awards, among them being the titles of best drama series, best actor in a drama (Sanada), and best actress in a drama (Anna Sawai). Since then, the show has gone on to win numerous additional awards, including the Golden Globe for the best drama series.
In the first season’s summary, “Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada), facing danger as his adversaries on the Council of Regents joined forces against him, found hope when a stranded European ship was discovered in a nearby village. The English captain, John Blackthorne (Jarvis), revealed crucial strategic knowledge to Toranaga, which ultimately shifted the balance of power and enabled him to triumph in a war that would shape the next hundred years.
