Fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of another season of the acclaimed show “Shogun,” and at last, there’s news about when it will air again. Here’s a glimpse into its planned schedule.

Initially, in March 2024, Shogun’s creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks stated that it was highly unlikely for a second season due to the series ending at the same point as James Clavell’s 1975 novel. However, just two months later, the critically acclaimed and record-breaking show was unexpectedly renewed for seasons 2 and 3 on FX. During this time, Kondo, Marks, and the Clavell estate collaborated to develop new content and gathered a team of writers.

A new comment brings a hopeful update for the series’ fans, but there’s a bit of a catch.

The writers’ room has a timeline for Shogun Season 2, but what does it mean?

Discussing exclusively with journalists backstage at the 2025 Golden Globes, Justin Marks shared that the writing team is nearly six weeks away from wrapping up their writers’ room for Season 2. This significant advancement is a big leap from September 2024, where the team had already completed 47 days in the writer’s room and had three fully developed outlines under their belt.

The only catch: what in the world can we expect out of Shogun Season 2?

In its debut, Shogun became Hulu’s most-viewed premiere and made history as the first non-English language series to win the Best Drama Series Emmy (among several Emmys it received). Given this success, there was some reservation about moving forward with Season 2 since the original novel by James Clavell doesn’t have a direct sequel within his six-volume Asian Saga.

In Season 1, Lady Mariko, played by Anna Sawai, serves as the central figure, but she may not appear in Season 2 (unless there are flashbacks or Blackthorne has visions). Similarly, Kashigi Yabushige is another character who won’t be featured in Season 2.

Hiroyuki Sanada’s character is undeniably significant, as he’s currently the only confirmed figure for Season 1. At the end of last season, Lord Toranga, played by him, had ambitious plans to establish Edo as the power center of Japan. Additionally, Blackthorne and Mariko’s widower are forming a new alliance, and it seems that an epic confrontation is brewing between the surviving Regents (as hinted in his flash-forward), with Lord Toranga leading the charge.

It seems likely that, with Lord Toranga’s adversaries in disarray, these characters will band together in some intricate fashion.

Hey there fellow enthusiast! Let’s jog our collective memories about how Season 1 wrapped up, shall we? In the meantime, I’ve got a list of terrific films to keep us entertained until Season 2 arrives. Enjoy!
