Episode 4 of The Last of Us Season 2 opens dramatically, reminiscent of a small yet impactful scene from the original game.
Under the supervision of Neil Druckmann, co-creator of The Last of Us game, and Craig Mazin serving as his co-showrunner, the television series has generally remained faithful to its original content.
Changes have been made to the arrangement of scenes, some characters’ importance has increased or decreased, and significant surprises have been adjusted for a more impactful outcome.
Although the main plot has stayed essentially unchanged, shifting to a different medium allows for deeper exploration of moments only hinted at in the game. For instance, the pivotal scene at the start of Episode 4 in Season 2 can now be delved into more thoroughly. SPOILERS follow…
How the game inspired shocking TV scene

The second season of The Last of Us initiates with a troop of FEDRA soldiers, including an unexpected appearance by Josh Peck, engaged in lighthearted banter within a truck. However, their commanding officer abruptly ends the joviality by tossing grenades into the vehicle, leading to an explosive start to the events that follow.
In the podcast, Mazin explains that the entire sequence was sparked by a gaming moment where you wander around, and Neil incorporated many small moments within the game, which are optional for players to discover. One such instance is the notes left behind by deceased FEDRA officers.
In Seattle, it’s clear that FEDRA officers had issues with FEDRA itself due to its poor performance, leading to an internal conflict. Additionally, you come across a FEDRA truck which you can enter. All these thoughts were swirling in your mind at the time.
In the game, there’s a significant amount of what we refer to as environmental storytelling. As you traverse the city, you encounter clues that show how FEDRA once controlled this Quarantine Zone, similar to what you witnessed in Season 1 or the first game. Later, they lost their control over it.
They split into these two factions involved in the rebellion: The Seraphites on one side, which included the Scars, and the WLF on the other. Notably, Craig mentioned a truck that was explosively destroyed, with its occupants trapped inside, as part of this upheaval.
Mazin adds: “So then, in my weird head, I start thinking, well, how did that happen?”
Introducing Isaac in The Last of Us Season 2

In the story or game, Isaac is the one who hurls the grenade, and on-screen, he’s portrayed by Jeffrey Wright. This pivotal scene, according to Mazin, offers an ideal opportunity to present the character.
In the game, you’ll find him as the head of WLF, but his origin isn’t always clear, mentions the showrunner. One such morning, I picked up the phone and said to Neil, ‘I have a wild idea.’ This approach, which I find intriguing, is an exciting way to kick off an episode. It’s quite self-contained.
Additionally, it offers an opportunity for us to start narrating a distinct tale, focusing on the newcomer, the young man portrayed by Ben Ahlers. It’s evidently his initial days in service or work, if I may guess.
“The helmet isn’t comfortable for him. He seems puzzled by their aggressive mentality, this ‘we against them.’ It’s as if they look down on others, considering themselves superior. This might be why Isaac offers him a choice instead of eliminating him like the rest, as he usually does.
Druckmann states: “We often discuss these factions, and there are instances where they view people from opposing groups, belonging to different tribes, as beyond redemption. In such cases, they believe that the only way to protect their own tribe is by eliminating these individuals.
This person seems open to influence, not yet hardened. I might present him with the option to join us. Isaac does this mental math in his truck.
