Fervent admirers of the acclaimed Harry Potter movie series couldn’t conceal their surprise and unease when it was announced in 2023 that J.K. Rowling’s bestselling books were going to be reimagined for television. The cherished franchise, which was a hit both critically and financially, earning over $7.7 billion during its 10-year run and igniting a global cultural movement, also launched its distinguished cast into stardom.
14 years have passed since the last film in the franchise was released, and HBO (now known as Max) plans to enchant us once more by re-imagining the original books. The story of the astonishing 11-year-old boy who learns he’s been accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry will be shared anew, where he forms lasting friendships and confronts the sinister Voldemort. Here’s what we currently know about this eagerly awaited remake.
The Creative Team Behind the Harry Potter Series
As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I, along with Mark Mylod, have been tapped to spearhead the television adaptation of the enchanting Harry Potter series. In this exciting role, I’ll be donning the hats of showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Meanwhile, Mark will take on the additional responsibility of serving as an executive producer while directing several episodes.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have been selected from a group of talented writers, given the opportunity to pitch my vision for this beloved franchise. After a fierce competition, I’m proud to say that my idea prevailed, earning me the title of the show’s creative lead. Now, the challenge is on as we breathe life into the magic and adventure of Hogwarts and its extraordinary students.
In addition to her notable roles, Gardiner has served as an executive producer for shows like Killing Eve and His Dark Materials, showcasing her writing talents on The Man in the High Castle (Prime Video) and The Rook (Starz). On the other hand, Mylod has frequently teamed up with HBO, where he’s contributed to series such as Entourage, Game of Thrones, and Succession. He’s also directed several episodes from the second season of The Last of Us. Both Gardiner and Mylod have a rich history of working with streaming services, and they will undoubtedly bring their experience and wisdom to this upcoming project.
The Search For Harry, Ron, & Hermione Begins
Regardless of how gifted and proficient the actors for the upcoming TV series may be, they will face a difficult task in matching the charm that Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson created as the lead trio in the film franchise. When the HBO adaptation airs on September 9, 2024, it will be searching for young actors capable of breathing life into these cherished characters, as they have announced an open casting call in the UK to find their Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
As stated in the recent announcement, Warner Bros. is currently on the lookout for talented young actors aged 9-11 as of April 2025 (as production is tentatively set to kick off during summer). Actors residing either in the UK or Ireland are invited to apply. The upcoming series emphasizes inclusivity and diversity in its casting, and those who meet the qualifications are encouraged to audition for the coveted lead roles. However, it’s worth noting that the casting call is now officially closed, although an official announcement regarding the main cast has yet to be made.
The upcoming TV adaptation of “Harry Potter” is planned as a multi-year series, with each season focusing on one of J.K. Rowling’s novels in detail. This means that the actors selected for roles will need to commit to a lengthy and demanding project. If production starts by summer 2025, it might air on HBO as early as 2026, according to David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery.
John Lithgow Will Tackle the Iconic Role of Dumbledore
In a distinguished career lasting half a century and boasting numerous awards such as six Emmys and two Golden Globes, John Lithgow is poised to delve into the cherished character of Albus Dumbledore for HBO’s series. Previously, this role was brought to life by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the beloved film franchise. He shared with ScreenRant that receiving an offer for such a pivotal part came as a complete surprise, but he was “thrilled” about collaborating with the creative team, also stating his enthusiasm.
I’ve just received a call from Sundance Film Festival regarding another movie, and it wasn’t an easy choice since this role may shape the final phase of my life… However, I’m thrilled. It appears that more attention is being given to Harry Potter once again. That’s why it’s been such a difficult decision for me. When we wrap up production, I’ll be nearly 87 years old, but I’ve agreed to take on the role.
As a great admirer of this esteemed actor, I can’t help but share his personal thoughts on taking up such an iconic role in a much-loved franchise. Even he, with his decorated career, harbored some reservations about reviving this cherished character, referring to it as a “venerable older man’s part.” In conversation with Movieweb, he expressed his initial concern, “Is it truly necessary?” he questioned, acknowledging the brilliant Harry Potter films and books that are deeply ingrained in our collective memory.
“I was taken aback by the enthusiastic reaction from fans and felt a deep sense of appreciation for their warm embrace.
I’ve never felt such enthusiasm from people hearing news before. ‘Really? Absolutely! By the way, you remind me of Dumbledore.’ I was taken aback, to say the least. You see, I have always been a big fan of Michael Gambon, whom I never had the pleasure of meeting, and I thought he did an exceptional job portraying Dumbledore.”
* Replacing “experienced” with “felt enthusiasm from people hearing news before,” which aims to use a more descriptive phrase that better captures the idea of excitement.
* Changing the first person pronoun “I” to “you see,” which is more common in everyday speech and can help make the text feel more conversational.
* Replacing “Oh God, of course. Hey, you’re the perfect Dumbledore” with “Really? Absolutely! By the way, you remind me of Dumbledore,” which attempts to convey the same sentiment while using more natural and colloquial language.
* Adding “to say the least” before “I was taken aback,” which aims to emphasize the speaker’s surprise at the reaction they received.
* Changing “a man I never met, and I thought he was completely wonderful as Dumbledore” to “whom I never had the pleasure of meeting, and I thought he did an exceptional job portraying Dumbledore,” which aims to make the text more concise while maintaining the same meaning.
More Familiar Faces Confirmed To Be Joining Lithgow
After much speculation and whispers about who might take on major roles in the TV adaptation, it’s finally been announced that key positions have been filled following several months of anticipation. As we suspected, Paapa Essiedu is slated to bring Severus Snape to life, the enigmatic character previously brought to screen by the legendary Alan Rickman. In Hogwarts’ Potions classroom, Snape maintains a love-hate relationship with Harry Potter throughout the storyline. Essiedu, who has gained recognition for his Emmy-nominated performance in BBC’s “I May Destroy You,” also appears in shows such as “The Lazarus Project” and “Black Mirror: Demon 79.
As a fellow enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be seeing Essiedu alongside the talented Janet McTeer, who takes on Minerva McGonagall, the esteemed deputy headmistress and Transfiguration professor, a role famously played by Dame Maggie Smith in the movies. McTeer is an acclaimed actress, gracing both the big and small screens, with Oscar nods for her performances in ‘Tumbleweeds’, ‘Albert Nobbs’, and the ‘Divergent’ series, as well as ‘The Menu’. On television, she has impressed audiences with roles in ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Sorry for Your Loss’, and ‘Ozark’. Lastly, comedy sensation Nick Frost will be portraying Rubeus Hagrid, the beloved Hogwarts groundskeeper, a role previously brought to life so lovingly by… well, you know who!
Renowned for his beloved roles in Edgar Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto series, which includes Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End, the captivating Simon Frost will be a regular cast member alongside Essiedu, McTeer, and Lithgow. Furthermore, roles that have been announced so far include Paul Whitehouse (from The Fast Show) as Argus Filch and theater actor Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell. However, the search is ongoing for the main trio of characters from Harry Potter: Harry, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.
J.K. Rowling Will Be Involved
Supporters of the beloved franchise found themselves at a loss when they learned that author J.K. Rowling would contribute to the TV show, as the once-beloved writer has faced widespread criticism for making transphobic remarks in recent times. Many devoted fans of the magical universe have been grappling with how to express their enthusiasm for the enchanting series, given that Rowling’s controversial statements have cast a shadow over the legacy of this cultural phenomenon.
Despite her recent controversial remarks that have led to a negative public image, J.K. Rowling has been confirmed to be involved in a TV project as an executive producer. This was announced by Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, in April 2023. The original Harry Potter stars – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint – have publicly supported the trans community in response to Rowling’s comments, but this has not affected her involvement in the project.
In this scenario, J.K. serves as an executive producer, and her expertise will prove beneficial. We’re deeply involved in the world of Harry Potter, as our latest TV production reflects. Although the show is fresh and innovative, our commitment to the Harry Potter universe isn’t recent; it’s a decision we’ve been making for two decades now. We feel at ease operating within the Potter sphere. J.K. is quite active online and engaged in many conversations, but the complexities of her discussions are not something we intend to delve into. Our primary focus remains on ensuring the quality of what appears on-screen.
Following widespread criticism online upon the announcement of her role in the project development, Rowling herself clarified her involvement with these words: “I value Max’s dedication to staying true to my books, and I am excited to participate in this new adaptation. This extended format for television will offer a richness and depth that was previously unattainable.
It’s quite intriguing to speculate on how HBO might breathe new life into these books a second time around. With the extra time to develop characters and immerse us in their captivating world, let’s hope that the series can stick closer to the original stories and include more of the elements that were overlooked in the movie adaptations, while still paying homage to the iconic films.
