Shocking Batman Character Death Shakes Up DC’s Absolute Universe

DC’s ‘Absolute Universe‘ has been full of surprises. While some changes have been minor, others have been significant, like the altered origin story in ‘Absolute Batman’ where only his father was killed. But the newest issue contains a truly shocking death that will permanently impact Batman in this alternate universe.

Scott Snyder wrote and Nick Dragotta illustrated Absolute Batman #19. The story begins by filling readers in on what’s been happening. Bruce Wayne is now isolating himself after his actions as Batman damaged his relationships. He’s decided to handle things on his own and is focusing even more on being Batman. At the same time, he’s intensifying his investigation into Jack Grimm V, a reclusive billionaire known as “Joker” who has recently become more visible.

Bruce is unexpectedly contacted by Jim Gordon. In this version of the story, Gordon isn’t the police commissioner, but the former Mayor of Gotham City. He also had a secret relationship with Martha Wayne and acted as a father figure to Bruce. Bruce agrees to meet with Gordon, unknowingly starting a series of unfortunate events.

What Batman ally just died in the Absolute Universe?

Gordon started investigating some suspicious activity and discovered a conspiracy connected to Batman. He grew increasingly frantic as he tried to share the information he’d found. In a desperate attempt to destroy the files, he accidentally caught himself on fire.

Okay, so things get intense – Jim Gordon’s suddenly having a full-blown panic attack, and then a huge flock of crows starts attacking him, actually pushing him dangerously close to the edge of a roof! He manages to quickly apologize to Bruce, figuring this is the end, and tries to jump to safety. It’s a really shocking moment, and we later find out the whole thing was orchestrated by the new version of Scarecrow – the ‘Absolute’ Scarecrow, as they’re calling him. It’s a classic Scarecrow mind game, but on a much larger scale.

Bruce attempts to apprehend Jim Gordon, but loses his grip, causing Gordon to fall and land on the ground. The onlookers below mistakenly believe Batman pushed him from the building. This incident prompts the current mayor, Hamilton Hill, to publicly denounce Batman and launch a campaign to capture him, ultimately leading to the creation of the Robin Program – a plan designed to bring Batman to justice.

Jim Gordon’s death is a significant change to the traditional Batman story. Although he’s always been a father figure to Bruce Wayne in most versions of the story, this death feels especially impactful because their relationship hadn’t fully formed yet. It’s also surprising to see such a morally strong character act cowardly, even if it was caused by Scarecrow’s tricks.

Absolute Batman #19 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
