Shinichiro Watanabe Confirmed Popular Theory About Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo and His Other Works, Including Lazarus

As a gamer with a keen eye for detail and a deep love for anime, I can’t help but feel like I’ve struck gold with Shinichiro Watanabe’s works. For years, I’ve been noticing those subtle connections between Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, Carole & Tuesday, and Lazarus, thinking they all belong to the same universe. And now, it seems my suspicions were correct!

For quite some time now, followers of Shinichiro Watanabe have pondered whether his popular anime series like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and more share the same fictional universe. This assumption is based on the fact that these shows use a common fictitious currency and include numerous subtle references to each other, such as easter eggs.

Up until now, this idea had been merely a hypothesis with several indicators supporting it. However, we now have confirmation from Shinichiro Watanabe himself during his interview with Anime News Network. He revealed that “Cowboy Bebop”, “Samurai Champloo”, “Space Dandy”, “Carole & Tuesday”, and “Lazarus” all exist within the same universe, ending the speculation and making the theory a reality.

I’ve always thought my shows took place in the same universe.

It seems that Watanabe is still producing works within the same fictional realm, but he ensures each series has its unique flair. This distinct style is expected to carry over into Lazarus, set to debut in 2025.

In an ongoing project, Watanabe worked in tandem with Chad Stahelski, the mind behind “John Wick”. Surprisingly, instead of offering choreography advice, as initially requested by Watanabe, Stahelski decided to handle all choreography for “Lazarus”. During the same conversation, Stahelski admitted that he took on this role because Watanabe’s work had inspired him for years. Notably, Stahelski and his team filmed actual fight sequences using stunt performers.
