Following a season premiere that featured a reunion with the stars of *Home Improvement*, *Shifting Gears* continued bringing in special guests. While baseball player Mookie Betts made a quick appearance at the start, Canadian actress Lilly Singh truly shined in this latest episode.
Singh, known from her previous talk show, appeared as a new character who had great chemistry with Kat Dennings’ Riley. However, the storyline didn’t quite work out, and it brought to mind my anxiety about interacting with other parents.

Georgia had Olivia over, and at first, Riley was nervous about meeting Olivia’s mom, Jen. But they soon discovered they had a lot in common and quickly bonded, even playfully teasing Matt while he got ready for his first date with Eve after they’d shared a kiss. Everything seemed ideal – their daughters were close friends, too – but that quickly changed.
How Shifting Gears Highlighted My Fear Of Making Friends With The Parents Of My Kid’s Friends
The latest episode of *Shifting Gears* really hit home for me as a parent – the storyline played on a major fear of mine, and I was captivated. The conflict between Georgia and Olivia was intense, and unfortunately, it quickly spilled over to their mothers, Riley and Jen. Despite hoping to stay friends, they ended up in a fierce argument, each defending their own child and accusing the other of being the aggressor.

Riley came home upset after arguing with Jen, only to find out that Georgia had already resolved the issue with Olivia, and they were friends again. However, Riley hadn’t spoken to Jen yet and wasn’t prepared to make up with her.
This situation really highlighted why I’m hesitant to become close to other parents just because our kids are friends. I have great friends who also have children, but that’s different. It gets tricky when your main connection with someone is through your kids’ relationship.
It’s common for children to change friends quickly, and that can be tricky for parents. As the show *Shifting Gears* illustrates, these shifts can create awkward situations. I believe in letting my child manage their own friendships, and I don’t want to overstep. Honestly, watching *Shifting Gears*, with Tim Allen, has just confirmed my tendency to avoid becoming friends with my child’s friends’ parents, and I’m not sure if that’s a positive or negative approach.
