Actor Douglas Henshall, who won BAFTA awards, has agreed to star in “Angh,” an upcoming independent movie that takes place in the 1960s, in the region of Nagaland, located in eastern India.
As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to share my thoughts on “Angh,” an impressive directorial debut by the talented Theja Rio. Known for his award-winning short films that have garnered attention at prestigious festivals such as Clermont-Ferrand, IndieLisboa, and Mumbai, this is a filmmaker to watch.
Rio is collaborating on this project with Nancy Nisa Beso and Bernardo Angeletti, producing through their banners Winter Hymns Films and Undercover Squirrel respectively. Together, they’re set to create something truly special in the world of cinema.
In the period drama set in 1960s Nagaland, Henshall, famous for his work on BBC’s “Shetland,” will portray a crucial character. This captivating story aims to shed light on an unexplored episode of Naga history. The tale revolves around a Konyak chief who valiantly fights to preserve his fading traditions when a foreign American missionary arrives, offering aid that could potentially erase his people’s identity. As his wife’s health worsens and famine looms, the chief and his mute son are faced with an unimaginable choice: survival or staying loyal to their ancestral customs.
This movie boasts an ensemble of debuting actors from Nagaland, all local to the region. Filmed entirely on 16mm film stock, it’s designed to deliver a rich, genuine visual style that complements the narrative. The production signifies a significant leap for Naga cinema, as it merges global filmmaking techniques with indigenous stories and talents.
In this movie, you’ll find an ensemble of fresh local actors hailing from Nagaland. Entirely captured on 16mm film, the production strives to deliver a layered, authentic atmosphere that reinforces the storyline. This project marks a major achievement for Naga cinema, as it combines top-tier international filmmaking skills with indigenous tales and performers.
As a cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that an international team of talented professionals has been brought together for this production. I, myself, am working alongside the renowned cinematographer Adam Pietkiewicz from Poland, Margarida Caetano Dias from Portugal as our production designer, Manisha Garg from India who is responsible for costumes, and Priya Lahon, a skilled makeup artist also from India. Niraj Kumar Pandey, an experienced line producer, is managing the logistics to ensure everything runs smoothly. This diverse team promises a unique and captivating cinematic experience.
Rio expressed great enthusiasm about sharing this tale. The rich history, unique culture, and untold tales of Nagaland offer tremendous potential for filmmaking, and this movie is our chance to let the world in on these treasures. Filming on 16mm, working with local talent, and having Douglas Henshall join us make this project all the more extraordinary. We believe it will significantly enrich the cinematic panorama.
Speaking about the movie, Producer Beso stated, “This production is deeply meaningful for us. We’re sharing a tale grounded in Nagaland’s past, yet its themes resonate universally. Working with local artists, an energetic international team, and filming on 16mm has been a unique and precious journey. The presence of Douglas Henshall just boosts our vision even more, and we eagerly anticipate unveiling this movie to the global audience.”

Producer Beso commented, “This project holds significant value for us as it’s a story that stems from Nagaland’s heritage but carries universal messages. The combination of local talent, an enthusiastic international team, and shooting on 16mm has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Having Douglas Henshall aboard further fortifies our vision, and we can hardly wait to introduce this film to the world.
The Winter Hymns Film Company hails from Nagaland, renowned for their acclaimed short films, contrasts with Undercover Squirrel, a creative outfit concentrating on boosting stories from less heard and diverse perspectives.
The film is expected to hit the international festival circuit upon completion.
