As a longtime fan who has followed the Cooper family saga since the early days of Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory, I find the decision to keep Sheldon absent from Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Thanksgiving gathering bittersweet.

Georgie and Mandy celebrated their first marriage with an early Thanksgiving… yet someone conspicuously absent. The rationale for this, as creators explain, aligns perfectly with Sheldon’s logic.

Since it’s only been a few months since George passed away, it’s understandable that the Cooper family is finding things difficult. This tension reached a peak during their recent Thanksgiving celebration, as Georgie attempted to bring everyone together with support from the McAllisters.

In these heartwarming scenes, there’s someone conspicuously absent – it’s Sheldon. At the end of Young Sheldon Season 7, he sets off for Caltech, a place we initially encounter him in The Big Bang Theory.

In the following years, I can’t pinpoint exactly how often I returned to Medford, but one thing I do know is that the first Thanksgiving without George was definitely not among those visits. A bit melancholic, I suppose, but not unbearably so.

In our initial conversation about the episode, there was indeed a question: ‘Should Sheldon be involved?’ There are times when he could potentially return, but as we were planning the episode, it seemed like his inclusion might negatively impact the plotline. This is what co-creator Steve Holland shared with TV Line.

In many cases, when a matriarch or patriarch passes away, the family may struggle to stay united, which appears to be the situation here. It would have been delightful to see Sheldon again, but it felt as though there was no scenario in which this family wouldn’t gather for Thanksgiving if Sheldon returned from California. Therefore, it seemed sensible from a narrative perspective that he didn’t return, and it made sense for the story we were trying to tell.

Although Episode 5 didn’t provide a defining moment, it doesn’t necessarily imply that Sheldon won’t appear in the upcoming TV series at all.

According to Holland’s statement, there are numerous chances for him to join the team, given that Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage has been greenlit for a complete 22-episode series.

On the other hand, actor Iain Armitage isn’t convinced that Sheldon should make another appearance. Previously, he told ET “They don’t need me showing up and interfering. I can’t wait to see what they come up with. However, I would be thrilled to appear in an episode.
