As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over the past few decades, I find Shekhar Kapur‘s latest endeavor to be nothing short of revolutionary. His decision to establish a film school in Mumbai’s Dharavi slum district, focusing on AI technology in filmmaking, is not only inspiring but also a testament to his visionary approach towards cinema.
Renowned director Shekhar Kapur has unveiled his intentions to build a movie institute within the bustling Dharavi slum area of Mumbai, with an emphasis on incorporating artificial intelligence into the craft of filmmaking.
This project is an extension of Kapur’s ten-year journey working alongside the Academy Award-winning musician A.R. Rahman on The Dharavi Project. Together, they developed a hip-hop and rap program in Dharavi, supported by Universal Music. This collaborative effort has seen numerous students rise to national fame.
Kapur shared with EbMaster that those children have gained national recognition. For quite some time, he’s been urged, “Start a film school!” He plans to establish a film school in Dharavi, and his motivation stems from the belief that artificial intelligence represents a fresh wave in the cinema industry.
Kapur is recognized for his diverse body of work which encompasses films such as “Masoom”, “Mr. India” from Indian cinema, the intense biopic “Bandit Queen”, the Oscar-winning film “Elizabeth” starring Cate Blanchett, “The Four Feathers” featuring Heath Ledger, and the romantic comedy “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” He also holds the position of festival director for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI).
As a passionate film enthusiast, I wholeheartedly agree with Kapur’s perspective: AI is undeniably the most democratic technology we’ve witnessed so far. Regardless of what others may claim, it’s clear that my future rivals won’t be the giants in the director’s world, but rather that 15-year-old girl residing in a Mumbai slum. This young woman, with her profound understanding of prompting, can effortlessly craft one-minute, two-minute, even ten-minute films, all from her computer. And let me tell you, she’s bound to surpass my skills.
I was given the insight that mastering that technology could transform me into “the world’s most remarkable filmmaker.
Although the specific date for the school’s opening hasn’t been finalized yet, Kapur mentioned that initial tasks have already been initiated. Discussions are ongoing with prominent collaborators, but specifics are currently being held in private.
