Shekhar Kapur Reveals IFFI Revamp, Says Technology-Focused Waves Event Will Be ‘Very Sexy’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie buff with a deep appreciation for both traditional and modern cinematic arts, I am thrilled about Shekhar Kapur‘s appointment as the festival director of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and his plans to expand its scope. With decades of experience in the film industry, Kapur’s insightful perspectives on artistic excellence and technology make him an ideal figurehead for this transformative endeavor.

Shekhar Kapur, an experienced filmmaker who was recently named festival director for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), has announced plans to broaden the horizons of this 55-year-old Goa event. One of his proposals is to introduce a new tech-centric component called “Waves,” which will run alongside the main festival.

On the 24th of July, Kapur took on the role as director for IFFI’s (International Film Festival of India) 55th and 56th editions. Kapur intends to establish IFFI as a worldwide center for traditional cinema and innovative content technology. According to Kapur, who spoke with EbMaster, “Our goal is to organize a festival that showcases artistic merit while staying at the forefront of content production development.”

As a long-time attendee and supporter of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI), I am thrilled to learn about this year’s major addition – Waves. Having experienced the magic of IFFI firsthand, I can only imagine the excitement this new event will bring.

“According to Kapur, India is expected to lead the way in content creation due to its vast output. Given this role, the technology behind content production will hold significant importance in India.”

Waves intends to highlight innovative technologies and attract financial commitment towards India’s tech industry. In simpler terms, we are inviting individuals to explore the potential of using their existing technology here, while also urging them to establish and develop intellectual property within India.

Kapur highlighted the importance and potential impact of the event, pointing out that India ranks as the world’s second-largest consumer of content following China. With great excitement, he described it as “an extremely attractive festival” or “one of the major festivals.”

At IFFI’s conventional film segment, Kapur emphasized the significance of preserving artistic quality. “The art of storytelling remains our leading edge,” he remarked. “It symbolizes our pursuit of perfection. Recognition will be bestowed upon those who pursue artistic perfection.”

Kapur additionally pointed out IFFI’s newer OTT (streaming) accolades, acknowledging the role these platforms play in unearthing fresh acting, writing, and directing talents. “We can no longer overlook OTT,” he emphasized. “It has significantly fueled the emergence of new creative talent.”

Regarding AI’s influence on the entertainment sector, Kapur acknowledged the importance of striking a balance. He emphasized that AI is a technology too significant to be overlooked, and we must tackle the issue of intellectual property rights. Our goal should be to discover methods where AI and human creativity complement each other rather than clash.

Kapur issued a caution about the possible repercussions of clashes between AI and conventional industrial positions. “We cannot risk a confrontation,” he stated, “as AI has the upper hand due to its widespread popularity and current usage by many.”

To demonstrate AI’s capability, Kapur told a story about his cook, Nilesh, using ChatGPT to create a treatment for the sequel to his successful 1987 film “Mr. India 2.” He remarked that Nilesh’s work was of equal quality to that produced by others. Since then, Nilesh has become fascinated with different AI-generated art forms.

As a huge fan, I’m thrilled to share that the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is not just any ordinary film event. It’s home to Film Bazaar, which is South Asia’s biggest content market. I’m counting down the days for the 55th edition of IFFI, happening from November 20-28. And get this, our esteemed Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, might even grace us with his presence to inaugurate it! What an incredible opportunity that would be!
