Director David F. Sandberg, known for ‘Shazam’, nearly gave up on creating movies based on intellectual properties due to negative feedback from disgruntled fans, while he was promoting his film version of the well-known video game ‘Until Dawn’.
The latest film in his repertoire, “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” from DC Comics, didn’t fare well critically despite the original 2019 superhero movie being a financial hit. In an interview with Gamesradar, Sandberg discussed the impact of the unfavorable fan response on him personally.
In truth, followers can become extremely passionate and even furious with you, leading to threatening messages or worse. Following ‘Shazam 2’, he expressed that he didn’t want to participate in any more franchise films as the potential risks weren’t worth it.
In a now-removed tweet following the premiere of “Shazam 2” in 2023, Sandberg expressed that he was taking a break from superhero films for the moment.
Recently, my film on Rotten Tomatoes received both my lowest score from critics and highest rating from audiences. I hadn’t anticipated such a similar response to the initial movie critically, but I was still somewhat taken aback since I believe it’s a decent picture. Ah well. For quite some time now, I’ve been yearning to delve back into horror films (and explore new creative avenues as well). After six years of ‘Shazam’, I’m currently taking a break from superheroes. To clarify, I have no regrets about the ‘Shazam’ movies whatsoever. They’ve been invaluable learning experiences and I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with some exceptional individuals. I’ll always be thankful for the opportunity to direct two of these films! Creating them was quite a challenge, but they’ve been rewarding experiences. One aspect I’m particularly excited about is stepping away from the superhero discussions online. A great deal of that tends to cause me stress, and it will be refreshing not having to think about it anymore.
This week, I found myself drawn back into the chilling realm of horror with the release of “Until Dawn.” It’s a thrilling time-loop horror film that traps a group of us, young adults, in a cabin, battling waves of dreadful monsters time and time again.
He shared with Gamesradar: “Initially, I was hesitant upon receiving this script, but the idea of diving into such a thrilling horror experience seemed too enticing to resist. Somehow, I felt compelled to take on the role, trusting that the audience will appreciate our intentions and enjoy it.”
He further explained his excitement over the time loop concept in the storyline: “The writers’ ingenious idea of repeating each night because it mirrors the gameplay experience, where players rewind and make alternative choices. I believe this approach aligns perfectly with the essence of the game.
