Shaz Khan’s film titled “The Martial Artist” is set to debut globally in cinemas, and North American and British viewers will have their chance on April 4, right after the Eid festivities. This information was shared during Hong Kong FilMart, as a side note.
The movie, titled “Ibby ‘The Prince’ Bakran,” will premiere in Pakistan on March 30th, followed by a release in the MENA region on May 8th. Further international dates are yet to be announced. In this sports drama, Khan plays the main character Ibby Bakran, an ambitious MMA fighter whose rapid success is halted due to his personal vices. As his fighting career falters, a family secret propels him on a voyage to Pakistan to reconnect with his absent grandfather and face his most profound realities.
Khan chose MMA as a unique perspective for his work, since it’s widely recognized worldwide but rarely depicted on screen. In addition to the common themes of self-discovery and redemption found in many stories, he saw an opportunity to incorporate cultural pride and Eastern wisdom through the character of the mentor,” Khan explained about his decision.
In the movie “The Martial Artist,” directed and co-written by Khan alongside Michael Ross Albert, the focus extends beyond the octagon. As Khan explained, the core message of the film is that true mastery, whether in combat or life, stems not solely from raw power or ambition, but rather from harmony with one’s inner self.
The movie showcases a talented group of actors such as Sanam Saeed, Babar Peerzada, Thesa Loving, and Faran Tahir. Interestingly, Tahir is not only an actor in this production but also one of the producers. He joins forces with Khan, Will Lurié, Shiraz Khan, Faisal Rehman, and Faraz Khan to produce this film.
The movie goes beyond Mixed Martial Arts; it delves into the essence of personal identity. As we peel back layers, it’s about facing our true selves, Khan explained. It’s a tribute to our past while charting a fresh course. It’s a story of redemption, not solely through triumph, but by grasping what holds real value.
