As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that while I accurately guessed who the “Pit Girl” in Yellowjackets was, I never fathomed the part Shauna Shipman (Sophie Nélisse) would enact in her demise. From the very first episode, one of the central mysteries in Yellowjackets revolved around the figure that sprints through the snow, tumbles into a pit, is pierced by stakes, and later becomes the group’s dinner. This character, dubbed “Pit Girl” by fans, was shrouded in speculation regarding her true identity among viewers. However, I certainly didn’t foresee Shauna playing such a crucial role in this tragic fate.
In the second season of Yellowjackets, significant moves are made to uncover the mystery of Pit Girl as the teenage survivors consume Jackie Taylor (Ella Purnell) and Javi Martinez (Luciano Leroux) following their demise. Since the group has now fully embraced cannibalism, it was inevitable that Pit Girl would be consumed next. The final episode of Yellowjackets season 3 ultimately reveals who Pit Girl is, and although her identity isn’t entirely shocking, Shauna’s connection to the revelation adds a surprising twist.
I Knew Mari Would Be The Pit Girl In Yellowjackets, But I Didn’t Think Shauna Would Be The One To Seal Mari’s Fate
Shauna Switches The Draw Order
In a surprising twist, it’s unveiled that Pit Girl is actually Mari Ibarra (played by Alexa Barajas), and much like many viewers, I had anticipated this revelation. However, unlike my expectations, Shauna was the one who determined Mari’s destiny. Van Palmer (portrayed by Liv Hewson) manipulates the deck of cards so that Hannah Finch (Ashley Sutton) draws the Queen of Hearts. Since Hannah is not a member of the Yellowjackets, the reasoning behind this decision seems to be that if someone from their group must perish, it might as well be her.
Shauna shifts her position in the lineup, which ultimately results in Mari drawing the Queen of Hearts, instead of Hannah. Had Shauna not moved, it would have been Hannah who was targeted, and Mari would not have gained the title of the “Infamous Pit Girl.” Although Shauna does not directly cause Mari’s death by pushing her into the pit, she plays a significant role in the events leading up to it.

Season 3, Episode 1 Foreshadows What Will Happen To Mari & Shauna
In the opening of Yellowjackets season 3, episode 1, a chase ensues where Shauna pursues Mari, bites her hand, and they engage in a physical altercation before being separated. Later in the episode, tension escalates as Shauna contaminates Mari’s venison stew by spitting into it, leading to another heated confrontation between them. The season 3 finale culminates this ongoing conflict as Shauna’s actions ultimately lead to Mari drawing the Queen of Hearts card, causing laughter and satisfaction for Shauna as the group prepares to hunt their own teammate in a chilling countdown.
Season 3 opens with Shauna attacking and consuming Mari, signifying a victory in their struggle. Yet, Mari’s statement about Shauna receiving her due hints at the hardships that will befall Shauna later on. In the current timeline of Yellowjackets, Shauna is seen struggling with misery and abandonment by loved ones, suggesting Mari’s prediction may come true – Shauna will eventually face consequences for her actions.
Mari Was Technically Still A Decoy In Yellowjackets Season 3’s Finale
Her Death Makes Natalie’s Call Possible
In the reality, Mari meets her unfortunate end, while her identity as Pit Girl serves as a clever diversion. Meanwhile, absorbed in tracking down, slaying, and consuming Mari, Shauna overlooks the situation entirely. Natalie Scattorcio (portrayed by Sophie Thatcher) grabs the satellite phone and sets off to initiate the call that could potentially secure the Yellowjackets’ rescue mission. The duo of Hannah and Natalie exchange positions, but Shauna remains oblivious to this swap until the following day due to her preoccupation with assuming the role of Antler Queen and basking in her triumph over Mari.

In the event that Mari hadn’t taken on the role of the Pit Girl, I might never have found a chance to escape unnoticed and connect with the outside world. Despite my belief that Mari would become the Pit Girl, I could not have foreseen the significant part she would ultimately play in our rescue mission. Regrettably, Mari won’t get to reap the benefits of her selfless act, yet considering the misery, deception, and mortality that seem rampant in the adult timeline of Yellowjackets, she may have been rescued from a bleak fate.
